Covid-19 has not significantly affected us financially.

Our program is very hands-on and involves numerous in-person meetings. this has not been possible during Covid-19, which greatly reduced the number of Veteran-pet matches we made. Additionally, the lack of suitable animals in shelters limited our ability to make matches.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

We shifted our focus to providing additional emotional and financial support to our previously matched Veterans. This included an increased number of contacts with the Veterans as well as covering the cost of veterinary care and pet food.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

We will continue providing this assistance even after the pandemic is behind us. It has had a positive impact on the Veterans and their families knowing that Pets for Vets is concerned for their continued well-being.

Our staff presents at conferences, most recently at Clicker Live in January 2022. We provide speakers for community organizations such as Rotary and Lions Club. We partnered with National Society of Children of the American Revolution to raise awareness of the contributions of our military and their families and to raise awareness of our program. We use social media to connect with our audience and share pertinent information not just about Pets for Vets but also services and issues of importance to our Veteran community. We participate in the Combined Federal Campaign and present at their events. We work with shelters, dog rescues, the VA, American Legion and other military related groups to share information and promote services for the Veteran community. We have partnered with Dr. Cheryl Krause-Parello, Associate Dean for Nursing Research and Scholarship (Interim), Florida Atlantic University, on research projects.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


Covid-19 entered our lives and our daily routines in ways that we could not have imagined prior to February 2020 and has challenged us to look for ways to provide additional assistance to our Veterans and their animal matches. Some of our Veterans and/or their spouses have lost their jobs. Others have had their pay reduced. Studies show that Veterans with PTSD or depression can experience immuno-suppression and respiratory conditions putting them at higher risk for Covid-19. Our Veterans need the companionship of their pets now more than ever. We do not want them to have to choose between feeding their families and taking their pets to the veterinarian and we want to help ease some of the stress our Veterans are experiencing. We are uniquely suited to provide additional supports because we stay in contact with our Veterans throughout the life of the match and encourage them to come to us when they need assistance. Several of our Veterans have requested financial assistance during the past two years. We have been able to provide ongoing veterinary care and pet food, which alleviates some of the financial stress on our Veterans. We will continue this extra assistance for the duration of Covid. We are meeting the needs of our Veterans and positively impacting military families by assisting in healing the emotional wounds of the Veteran, which strengthens the quality of life for the Veteran and his/her immediate family. One Veteran said "Thank you so much this will definitely help my family this holiday season." Another said "Wow! What a blessing!"
