Little Bulgarian School in Chicago
Mission
Founded in 2010, the Little Bulgarian School in Chicago’s (LBSC) mission is to empower the Bulgarian community in the Chicago region through high-quality pre-K to 12 education in Bulgarian language, culture, and heritage. By utilizing innovative teaching approaches, bilingual instruction, vibrant events, and active community engagement, LBSC is dedicated to safeguarding Bulgarian traditions, reinforcing the Bulgarian identity among the diaspora, and nurturing a deep connection for current and future generations. All educational programs are certified by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science, and students receive equivalent tutoring in Bulgarian language and history for their respective grades in the Bulgarian school system. In 2019, LBSC founded the Little Bulgaria Cultural Center to create an inclusive and creative environment for established and informal organizations that further engage and empower the Bulgarian community. In 2023, LBSC received certification from the Illinois State Board of Education and opened the Bulgarian Academy of Languages, an elementary day-school with an inaugural class of 6 kindergarteners.
Vision
The vision of the Little Bulgarian School in Chicago is to grow and evolve its educational programs and further solidify its place as a pillar of the Bulgarian community in the Chicago area. LBSC’s goal is to continue to improve the curriculum, expand extracurricular activities, and ensure state-of-the-art bilingual education. The goals of the Little Bulgaria Cultural Center, which partners with other organizations to provide events for adults and families of all backgrounds are as follows: Support more inclusive programs for the Des Plaines community; Continue to foster the cultural and educational development of the Bulgarian diaspora; Nurture a strong sense of belonging and pride in kids, students, and young adults; Create the next generation of artists, teachers, and leaders
Goals
- 1.Since it's founding, the Little Bulgarian School in Chicago has always been dedicated to expanding and increasing access to it's core educational programs for the Bulgarian-American community in the Greater Chicago area. It now offers access at 3 different locations, online instructions, as well as multiple-day availability.
- 2.The Little Bulgarian School in Chicago started as a Sunday school for the Bulgarian-American community. Over the years, it grew from a school into a cultural center by expanding its programs to meet the community's identified needs.
- 3.The Little Bulgarian School in Chicago follows stringent and conservative financial policies. In the past 6 years it has invested over 700k in expanding the capacity by adding more spaces and improving the existing ones.
