Due to school closures and social distancing, we could not execute our traditional program at partner schools and organizations.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
With increasing demand for fitness and wellness programming, we pivoted and created a robust series of fitness videos for home use. We increased the number of yoga and mindfulness videos as well, to meet the social emotional needs of children and youth during the Pandemic. We also enhanced our virtual trainings. Staff worked remotely, meeting virtually rather than in person.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
As we built our virtual programming via production of a series of videos, we have found that our school and organizational partners love it! And kids are using our programming increasingly in out of school hours, at the home. We continue to add to and to enhance our video library, and we have adapted it as a part of Fit Kids programming, which will supplement our traditional on-campus programming.

We have a staff member who is dedicated to building collaborations and partnerships in communities throughout the nation. We work very closely with school districts, individual schools, and other organizations, such as Boys and Girls Clubs and YMCA's to collaborate, share best practices, and learn from one another. During the Pandemic, as we made an increased commitment to impacting youth fitness through social media, as well as building community awareness of our work, Fit Kids hired a Director of Social Media. Because of the increased community knowledge of the work of Fit Kids, our Founder, Ashley Hunter, was named to the Governor’s Advisory Council on Physical Fitness and Mental Well-Being.
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
The last few years have been unpredictable for the schools and youth-serving organizations that we partner with. As the Pandemic escalated and the youth we serve were homebound, Fit Kids quickly pivoted, doubling down on video and other digital tools to ensure our programs were deliverable and impactful. We relaunched our website and reorganized Coach’s Corner, the secure portion of the site where program partners access the Fit Kids curriculum and other digital resources. Fit Kids also provided students at partner sites access to our password protected online workout library to ensure they could stay active at home, on their own schedules. To inspire kids who were stuck at home, we added a new category to our online library, Inspiration Videos, featuring famous professional athletes offering kids support and encouragement to keep moving. We also developed and launched the first Fit Kids mobile app, which made its debut in the spring of 2021. It mirrors the content of our online video library, making it even easier for coaches, parents and kids to keep moving. The second Fit Kids app will launched in the fall of 2021. We designed it for coaches teaching Fit Kids, who will benefit from having all our curriculum and training content at hand whenever they need it. FitKids. The fun, energetic instructors who deliver the Fit Kids program in our Coach’s Corner videos also appeared in a new digital project, FitKids.TV, which launched in early 2022. All of the adaptations that we made during the last few years have become intrinsic parts of our programming and are now integrated into the work we do each day!
