Camping & Education Foundation

Mission

To develop young men and women through transformational wilderness experiences that celebrate a love of the outdoors. Within the foundation, two summer camps based in northern Minnesota offer 3- to 21-day canoe and backpacking trips for youth ages 8-18: Camp Kooch-i-ching for boys and Camp Ogichi Daa Kwe for girls. The organization also oversees the Urban Wilderness program, a hands-on learning experience for students in grades 5-12 combining STEM-based boatbuilding workshops and field trips to local greenspaces. Urban Wilderness has chapters in Cincinnati, OH, and Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN, and travels across the country to offer programming to schools and organizations. The Camping and Education Foundation also utilizes Owakonze, a remote tripping outpost in Ontario, Canada, as a capstone experience for some Urban Wilderness students.

Urban Wilderness & Owakonze: As we continue to grow, Urban Wilderness will be an iconic, community-driven organization, empowering youth and adults to connect with the natural world through education, leadership development, and transformative experiences. We will continue our mission to build hard skills, leadership qualities, and a strong community of individuals passionate about outdoor exploration and education. Camp Kooch-i-ching/ Camp Ogichi Daa Kwe: The camps will be recognized as leaders in wilderness expeditions and outdoor leadership, passionate for working with young people and fostering a staff culture of expertise and community service while being ever mindful of our surrounding natural environment.
