How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
We lost a total of 18 fundraisers in 2020 due to COVID. The impact was a loss of $151,000 (as compared to the same events in 2019, pre-COVID)
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
More severe restrictions on guests staying in the three Dayton-area Fisher Houses. We never shut down, but guests were limited to one nonmedical attendant. Of course, a lot of medical appointments changed from in-person to video/phone, so no need to travel to the Medical Centers for appointments. Due to capacity limitations instituted by the Government, our organization paid for local hotels for "overflow" guests so they did not absorb any hotel expenses for their visit.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
We continued to support the House manager and guests by purchasing hand sanitizer, gloves, masks and footies. Also air purifying units. In addition, we paid for local hotel stays when capacity limits were reached.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
No new programs implemented - we are just looking forward to getting back to pre-COVID "normal" guest support!

No changes really necessary as long as the organization continues to support requests from the House managers in what they need to support the House guests. We have never denied a request for support from either of the two House managers.

COVID impacts for the last 18+ months have limited Board interactions to Zoom meetings and one in-person meeting. Zoom has made it hard for investing in leadership development; however, the Executive Director has "attended" a large number of Zoom webinars.

The Executive Director is a regular contributor to other Fisher House organizations and speaks (leads seminars) at the Friends of Fisher House annual conference as well as webinars. Advertising in local media; television and radio interviews; speaking to veterans organizations and other organizations to increase awareness of our mission and program.
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
The largest external change in the last year has been the COVID impact. The Fisher Houses have never closed, but there have been restrictions on who and how the guests can be supported. We provided PPE to the three Fisher Houses to ensure the safety of the staff and guests. The Houses have never closed during COVID and supported nearly 550 families in 2021 (more than 525 families in 2020 and more than 1,200 families in 2019 - pre-COVID).
