How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

2020 Financials were not impacted negatively compared to 2019. However, the first quarter of 2021 has decreased by 18% (includes individual, corporate, and church partnerships).


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on our Certification programs in Los Angeles and New York. With stay-at-home orders and forced quarantines, our certification went from in-person instruction to immediate online learning. Although the relational component of the certification has long been a hallmark of our program, with the implementation of cohort facilitators, we saw a strengthened attendance (nearly 100%) and a 100% graduation rate of all 30 certificate candidates. COVID-19 also caused our training program, which was planned in 2020 to be more regionalized to move online. We pivoted to offer youth workers 24 weeks of online training from How to Engage Youth in this Pandemic to How to Deal With Trauma in this Time. We served over 900 youth workers and had over 52,000 views of these training sessions in 2020.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

In 2020 we lost our physical offices and had to begin to work virtually. Virtual checkpoints with the entire staff each week allowed us to remain connected throughout Pandemic. We also had to secure a physical location for our finance office so that we could continue to process mail, produce checks, and process bank deposits in order to meet our financial policy requirements for multiple approvals/signatures.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

For our certification, we discovered that the role of our program facilitators was just as if not more important as our course trainers. The facilitators, which previously were a single individual for both cohorts, were changed in 2020 to be 1 facilitator for each cohort. The need to take the certification experience online gave us an understanding that the program could exist as a hybrid instruction model with a strong emphasis on quality facilitation. This inspired us to have that inform the next iteration of our certification program going forward in 2021. For training, it became abundantly clear that urban youth workers are in need of relevant, practical training. By offering the touchpoint of weekly Zoom calls to train and connect with youth workers, we learned that this is a great need nationwide for training, especially in a rapidly changing world. This form of training will continue for us going forward.

We invest in our leaders through our trainings and programs. We provide tools, resources, teaching, and certification courses to help train leaders for more effective, impactful work in urban youth ministry. Our 13 month Certification Program offers leadership training and personal development tools, equipping leaders with the 12 elements of effective youth ministry and focuses on personal leadership, ministry, and community. We offer a targeted and intensive coaching experience for high-capacity urban leaders through our NXT LVL Leadership Coaching program, focusing on best practices for operative, personal, and strategic impact. In partnership with DVULI, we have launched 10 Fuel Networks throughout the country for youth leaders to form a connection with other leaders in their cities. Each regional network establishes a specific mission, determined by each community, supported by 3 major objectives: Gather & Connect, Carry & Care, Create & Collaborate.

UYWI committed to doing 5 things to combat issues youth workers have faced during the COVID-19 crisis: 1. NETWORK NOW - Creation of Networks: We created stronger national and regional networks that encourage, resource, and care for urban leaders throughout the country who continue to reach youth with the Gospel during this pandemic. 2. PRACTICE NOW - Implementation of Best Practices: We continually discovered and shared the best practices for social engagement with youth during this time of physical distancing. 3. SPEAK NOW - Conversations About the Future: We ignited a conversation about how the new reality shapes the future of the Church and the movement of urban leaders. 4. COLLABORATE NOW - Collaboration for the Future: We collaborated and created strategies around the effects of this pandemic for the future of the Church. 5. CREATE NOW - Creation of New Resources: We continued to create the most authentic, impactful, and relevant resources, training, and coaching for urban leaders to usher in the future. Our heart has been to provide our leaders with the content and resources they need as they lead the next generation. Our team has worked to create content to specifically encourage and resource our leaders who have been navigating the practical issues facing their communities. We are committed to lead in this time because we believe in our leaders.
