During the pandemic, LJI's COVID-19 research has elevated the Institute's visibility, and resulted in increased numbers of donors, supporters, and charitable revenue.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
In March 2020, LJI temporarily ceased all non-essential onsite operations. Non-essential employees continued working offsite, and all in-person educational seminars were moved to virtual offerings. During this time, LJI also implemented virtual programming for the public, to continue sharing important research and insights during the pandemic.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
A team of scientists at La Jolla Institute for Immunology won the XPRIZE Rapid COVID Testing competition. The team developed and successfully implemented a fast, inexpensive, saliva-based COVID-19 screen that allowed the Institute’s laboratories to reopen safely in 2020. Additionally, LJI implemented remote and hybrid work to adapt to changing conditions throughout the pandemic.

Through LJI's groundbreaking COVID-19 research, scientists have uncovered significant findings that will inform research in other diseases. Additionally, LJI plans to continue to embrace virtual programming as well as remote and hybrid work environments.

On September 2, 2021, Erica Ollmann Saphire, Ph.D., formally began her term as La Jolla Institute for Immunology's fifth President and CEO. Dr. Saphire is currently a professor in LJI’s Center for Infectious Disease and Vaccine Research and the Director of the Coronavirus Immunotherapy Consortium (CoVIC), which united academics, non-profits, small and large biotechs, and major corporations from around the globe to address the urgent need of identifying the most efficacious antibody therapeutics to prevent and treat COVID-19. In her new role as president, Dr. Saphire will capitalize on the Institute’s focus on human immunity and the depth of expertise to recruit new faculty in strategic areas, foster diversity, talent, innovation, and financial strength to bring to bear the power of our immune system on heart disease, autoimmunity, cancer, and infectious disease. Dr. Saphire will maintain her research laboratory during her presidency.

The La Jolla Institute was formed with strong ties to major academic and medical centers, including UC San Diego (UCSD) and Scripps Research. LJI’s first board of directors included Dr. Gerard Burrow, past dean of UCSD’s School of Medicine. He fostered a close relationship between LJI and UCSD Medical Center that provided for joint research activities, consultation and training in the fields of allergy and immunology. The informal relationship built on shared research interests and successful scientific collaboration was formalized in 2015, when LJI entered an official affiliation agreement with UC San Diego Health System and the UC San Diego School of Medicine.

In 2020, LJI faculty came together to form the LJI Coronavirus Task Force and swiftly published pivotal studies on how the immune system responds to SARS-CoV-2. This work helped inform early vaccine efforts and has been lauded by National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Director Anthony Fauci, M.D., for shedding light on how to fight the virus. Throughout the pandemic, the staff of the LJI Next Generation Sequencing Core kept the Institute running safely by developing a rapid, saliva-based COVID-19 screening—and won an XPRIZE for their efforts. As researchers labored around the clock on these studies, staff in the LJI administrative offices helped secure funding for this work, ensured workplace safety, communicated the scientific findings and much more.
