Donors have expressed extreme concern about the use of their personal information by charities and the desire to have this information kept confidential. The exchanging and sale of lists for telemarketing and the mass distribution of "junk mail," among other things, can be minimized if the charity assures the privacy of its donors. Privacy policies are assigned to one of the following categories:

  • Yes: This charity has a written donor privacy policy published on its website, which states unambiguously that (1) it will not share or sell a donor's personal information with anyone else, nor send donor mailings on behalf of other organizations or (2) it will only share or sell personal information once the donor has given the charity specific permission to do so.

  • Opt-out: The charity has a written privacy policy published on its website which enables donors to tell the charity to remove their names and contact information from lists the charity shares or sells. How a donor can have themselves removed from a list differs from one charity to the next, but any and all opt-out policies require donors to take specific action to protect their privacy.
  • No: This charity either does not have a written donor privacy policy in place to protect their contributors' personal information, or the existing policy does not meet our criteria.

The privacy policy must be specific to donor information. A general website policy which references "visitor" or "user" personal information will not suffice. A policy that refers to donor information collected on the website is also not sufficient as the policy must be comprehensive and applicable to both online and offline donors. We and our donors dream of creating vast protected areas in the heart of the planet’s greatest natural and cultural diversity. We believe conservation success is defined by helping nature thrive so the people who depend on it can too. It means a forest where the towering trunks of old growth trees remain so that jaguars can still walk the ground at dawn. It means communities where children no longer get sick after a strong rain, because they have protected one of their most precious assets: water. It means a place where our own children can find joy in the living forms that will still endure. Our efforts are directed at working with local and indigenous communities, and with governments from the village to the national level. These bottom-up strategies result in conservation programs that work for the long-term.

In the last year, we have implemented several important investments in both formal and informal leadership development of our team members. We have hired and promoted senior staff from different backgrounds with tremendous raw talent and arranged for high-level on-the-job training to facilitate their continued growth. We have engaged with external organizational consultants to build leadership and team-building skills of current senior staff. And, we have introduced a tuition support policy to aid and encourage team members at all levels to pursue undergraduate and graduate education relating to their work in areas such as conservation, wildlife preservation, fundraising, and program management.

We treat communities as equal partners, supporting them in defining and achieving their own conservation goals. Some communities may want to designate and manage local protected areas to safeguard drinking water, others to enhance sustainable harvest of non-timber forest products. We ensure that conservation activities and outcomes meet the community’s needs and often this means working directly with indigenous populations. We’ve also created successful trust fund mechanisms, like our municipal water funds, to safeguard and ensure appropriate spending of conservation resources. We have developed collaborative agreements with national ministries to support them in implementing national conservation priorities. This gives us an avenue for and influence in setting the national conservation agenda. We do outreach on social media, work with local journalists to share news more broadly, and host community workshops such as firefighting, sustainable fishery management, and beekeeping.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


Protecting land in collaboration with local cultures is at the heart of Nature and Culture International’s mission. With the recent threats to indigenous populations, their way of life, and their rights to their ancestral territory, our work has never been more important. In 2021, Nature and Culture announced a remarkable victory for conservation and the Shuar people - securing the title for 14,021 acres of Tiwi Nunka forest in southern Ecuador. The titling follows a 21-year effort and secures ancestral territory and resources for 33 indigenous families within the community. The Shuar Kiim Center, located within Tiwi Nunka, plays an integral role in protecting the area and managing its resources. Tiwi Nunka is not only an important source of water, food, medicine, and material for the Shuar but also culturally significant as their ancestral homeland. Recognizing land rights and partnering with indigenous people are important in and of themselves, but also are crucial for conservation efforts. Research consistently shows that forests where indigenous peoples have secure land rights have significantly lower deforestation rates and release less carbon dioxide than adjacent lands. This is just one of many examples of our approach to helping indigenous communities gain autonomy through a legal framework and honor their ancestral culture and homeland.

Feedback practices have been shown to support better Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion outcomes, an essential area of assessment that we intend to further expand and develop in the future.
