Until Starlink became available in July 2023, internet access in rural Kenya was available only through expensive mobile plans and then, only to those who could afford a mobile device. Mobile data plans are cost prohibitive for the time-intensive, deep-learning that you can do today with a smartphone and a subscription to something like Grok, ChatGPT. Jatelo’s mission is to help rural youth access the digital tools of modern life that many take for granted, and to provide coaching around the explosion of AI tools they can use to improve their own situations. The coaching we provide teaches them how solve real-world problems with today’s AI tools. To this end, we raise funds to gift laptops and Starlink subscriptions to rural schools the lack of web access has left the educators and students in rural areas, at an ongoing disadvantage.
