The exchanging and sale of lists for telemarketing and the mass distribution of "junk mail," among other things, can be minimized if the charity assures the privacy of its donors. How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

The financial realities of cancelling the 44th Cleveland International Film Festival in 2020 were harsh as most expenses had been incurred in advance, as is the way with film festivals. Earned income through ticket sales, memberships, and merchandise came to a screeching halt (plus there were hundreds of thousands of dollars in refunds). And many sponsorship pledges were never honored. The organization had to scenario plan based on financial unknowns, rely on its savings (built over the last 15 years), and draw the full amount from its line of credit in order to remain operational. The CIFF did receive an SBA PPP loan as well as CARES Act funding to help keep us afloat.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

The 44th Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) was cancelled on March 11, 2020 by Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson at a public press conference due to concerns regarding the global COVID-19 pandemic. With the support of the CIFF Board of Directors, the full-time staff pivoted right out of the gate to put into place CIFF44 Streams – our first ever online Film Festival. During a two-week period (April 15-28, 2020), the complex task of streaming 325 feature and short films resulted in 42,107 streams. There were technical issues, rights issues, customer service issues, and countless other issues to contend with. What normally would have taken nearly a year to orchestrate was successfully built and presented in a matter of weeks. The staff worked around-the-clock to make CIFF44 Streams happen – right on the heels of producing, but not getting to present, CIFF44.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

Staff began working remotely and holding all meetings via Zoom. We were also able to pivot and put in place our first virtual Festival and convert our student educational programming to a virtual format.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

The accessibility of virtual programming gave us an audience we had been unable to reach through in-person events. We hope to continue offering a portion of our programming in a virtual setting.

The CIFF was honored to partner with Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards for the fifth annual Cleveland Book Week, which ran from September 29 to October 4, 2020. The CIFF curated a collection of feature and short films that had REI and social justice at their core. This free and online event presented four feature films (each with a pre-recorded, post-film conversation) and two shorts programs, totaling 19 films. There were 2,340 registrations. The post-film conversations had a combined total of 600 views.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


Over the last year, and in light of the coronavirus pandemic, the film festival world and the film industry have changed (and continue to change) dramatically. In the spring of 2020 — a time when many movie theaters were closing and festivals were cancelling their programming and in essence folding their tents, — the CIFF pivoted right out of the gate to put into place CIFF44 Streams – our first ever online Film Festival. In 2021, we continued to reinvent our business model as well as our delivery model by producing an entirely virtual film festival, including engagement opportunities that sparked civic dialogue, created an emotional connection to our environment, and built a sense of community. The uniqueness of producing an online Festival presented abundant challenges and numerous opportunities. For example, our website required a significant redesign to provide a robust, user-friendly online environment for our Film Festival community (thereby serving the purpose of our Program Guide, which was not printed in 2021). And our team turned into a 24/7 Geek Squad to manage the technical components required for customer support and the Festival’s online streaming platform.

Feedback Labs has documented several studies which indicate that beyond achieving organizational goals, nonprofits that are attentive and responsive to concerns and ideas raised by beneficiaries establish stronger relationships with the people they serve, promote greater equity, and empower constituents in ways that can help to ensure better long-term outcomes.
