With roots tracing back to 1884, it is the purpose of the United Way of Greater Lima to mobilize and stimulate the interest and participation of the citizens of Greater Lima on behalf of worthy nonprofit charitable, health, welfare, or allied purpose organizations. The United Way of Greater Lima solicits, receives, and distributes contributions for partner agencies based on a volunteer review of programs, finances, performance, and the improvement of lives in Allen County. In August 2021, UWGL made it possible for all funded agency staff members as well as UWGL staff members and volunteers to attend the Global Leadership Summit at a reduced cost. In January of 2021, the President and CEO of UWGL attended the day-long webinar “Disney’s Approach to Business” by the Disney Institute where Leadership Excellence, Employee Engagement, and Quality Service were among the topics discussed. UWGL staff members attended the quarterly Women in Business luncheons offered by the Lima/Allen County Chamber of Commerce. The programs are specifically designed for today’s business woman featuring speakers and presentations that are timely and relevant to personal & professional development, leadership, and education.

What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?
The focus of our work is to bring people together to address the needs of the whole community. Through our annual campaign, we educate and inspire the public, company by company, to band together to make a difference. Our visibility in the community has allowed us to strategically collaborate with, or lead initiatives that impact people in positive ways. For example, the UWGL's led the way to bring the 211 program under local management. In addition, UWGL applied for a grant and coordinated the efforts to bring VolunteerUnited.com to our five county area, as a one-stop-shop for those who want to help and those who need help. Because the challenges we face are multifaceted, UWGL fights for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in our community. We do this by strategically funding non-profit social service programs that target these areas of need. We take every opportunity to speak to service clubs, schools, Chamber-Commerce about United Way mission and impact.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
UWGL's goal is to improve lives by uniting the caring power of our community. When the employees of the local P&G plant joined the pandemic response, the company changed production to produce 55 gallon drums of hand sanitizer. P&G called upon UWGL to determine where the greatest need was and to coordinate the delivery of the sanitizer. UWGL called upon its United Way network, and its relationships with corporate, government, faith and non-profit community partners. As a result, over 25 volunteers came together to bottle, label and package the product for distribution. With the help of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the product was distributed to hospitals, first responders and non-profit programs in 14 counties around the state. This was a great collaboration that UWGL was uniquely positioned to lead. A similar situation occurred when the local Ford Motor Company and UAW offered to share the newly developed Ford DIY air filtration system that mitigated risk of airborne spread of COVID-19 in enclosed spaces. Again, UWGL was asked to find areas of greatest need and to aid in the distribution of the filtration kits in the local community. Many of our funded partners were forced to change the way they provided services. Although UWGL grants are for specific uses, we worked with our partners to adjust funding requirements so grants could be used in ways unforeseen a year earlier. Internally, UWGL went virtual with its campaign. We created virtual pledge options and took the opportunity to advance our digital marketing through social media, video production, and broadcasting our presentations virtually. Our hope was that the 2020 campaign would be effective enough, despite the inability to speak face to face with potential donors, that our funded partners would not see a decrease in their UWGL grants. The generosity of the Allen County community delivered; the 2020 campaign was successful in achieving our goal. We will continue using our popular virtual options.
