Our annual gala was forced to cancel due to crowd size and venue. All of out education programs with schools and nursing homes were cancelled too (over 150 programs)


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

Due to social distancing we minimized client traffic at our clinic, store and shelter. The shelter closed several times due to covid infections causing a limited amount of staff.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

We streamlined the check-in/out process at the clinic resulting in speedier service. Our education programs were limited virtually so we constructed an outside viewing area for our ambassador animals to allow the public access in a safe manner.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

We will continue to promote animal stories on all social media platforms with emphasis on donate to help. The crisis foster programs unfortunately are growing so we have created a foster club house to help the animals we are temporarily housing.

Strategic Goals

The nonprofit organization presents evidence of strategic thinking and goal setting through sharing their most important strategic goals.


Goal One: We must always evolve. One great example covid taught us was the need to help people stricken with illness or in a domestic violence position with no escape. Thus we created our crisis foster program.

Our annual budget provides funds for our doctors, directors and lab staff to maintain their credentials. Our shelter director has been recognized by the "Million Cat Challenge" for her work as a result of her development programs. Additionally our wildlife director was chosen to present at the NWRC when it was held in 2019. Since Covid most of the opportunities are now virtual.

What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?

Our clinic provides low cost spay/neuter services to underserved populations. We work with local rescue groups to provide services for community cats. We are currently working with the local food bank to provide pet food to the same constituents needing human assistance and work very closely with a local woman's shelter to assist their animals in an abusive situation by allowing the owners to be reunited with their pet when they are back on their feet. At all of our outreach events we include booths for local non-profits at no charge. Our social media platforms are very active and we have about 25k followers where we raise awareness of our mission and also through our website. We were part of the coalition for implementing leash policies in Gary In and our education programs focus efforts in the underserved communities. Prior to covid we went weekly to the local youth detention center with a few dogs to give inmates an opportunity to decompress and learn about animal husbandry.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


Despite the news reporting an abundance of pet adoptions, the truth is there were severe droughts of animal availability because we regularly clear out local animal controls and because they are very often part of the police department they were being instructed not to engage due to covid. Once people returned to work and kids went to school again there was a dramatic increase in animal admissions because the dogs who were so happy to have family at home was now a problem due to destruction in the house. So we didn't only get more dogs we also got behaviorally challenged ones too. As a result we updated our inhouse protocols to focus on behavior practices and enrichment rather than drugs to change outcomes and retrained all staff members. We secured additional grant funding to help owners vaccinate and alter their animals instead of giving them up to the shelter.
