Since 1925, The Goodman Theatre has been a part of life in Chicago. Chicago's oldest and largest not-for-profit theater, The Goodman is committed to producing both classic and contemporary works, giving full voice to a wide range of artists and visions. Central to that mission is the Goodman Artistic Collective, a diverse group of outstanding theater artists whose distinctive visions have given the Goodman an artistic identity of uncommon richness and variety. By dedicating itself to three guiding principles - quality, diversity, and community - Goodman Theatre seeks to be the premier cultural organization in Chicago, providing productions and programs that make an essential contribution to the quality of life in our city. Goodman Theatre works closely on the municipal, state and federal levels to secure support and favorable conditions for the arts, working in partnership with groups like Arts Alliance Illinois (where Executive Director Roche Schulfer is on the Board of Directors), the League of Chicago Theaters (where Goodman General Manager John Collins is on the Board of Directors), the Theater and Communications Group and the Performing Arts Alliance. The theater’s staff has an internal advocacy group and regularly mobilizes around issues of local, state and national interest.

The most significant change in the past year was the selection of Susan V. Booth as Artistic Director in summer 2022, after a 10-month national search. Booth comes to the Goodman from a 21-year Artistic Directorship of Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre, where she oversaw the premieres of new works from Pearl Cleage, Tarrell McCraney, Stephen King, Kristian Bush, Mike Lew and many others, and originated commercial partnerships on such projects as The Prom; Tuck Everlasting; Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; The Color Purple; Bring It On: The Musical; Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring in ’da Noise, Bring in ’da Funk; and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL. Prior to her move to Atlanta, Booth held several positions in Chicago, including the role of Goodman Theatre Director of New Play Development from 1993-2001, where she shepherded new works from writers including Luis Alfaro, Rebecca Gilman, José Rivera, and Regina Taylor, among others. The Goodman Board of Trustees has expressed tremendous enthusiasm about the new possibilities created by Booth’s arrival, which are nonetheless expected to build on the Goodman’s long track record of artistic and programmatic achievement. In 2023/2024, the first Season planned by Booth as Artistic Director, the lineup includes an 8-play lineup with two world premieres, two major remounts of classic works and a series of contemporary new plays on topics ranging from luchador wrestling to the experience of English language learners.
