Vision

In December, 2024, NSHSS opened a new, state-of-the-art homeless shelter in the Rogers Park neighborhood that houses 70 men every day, the first new shelter for men in Chicago in over a decade. Clients receive 3 meals a day, free laundry, free physical and behavioral health care, and on-site case managers, plus so much more. Only 2 men share each of the 35 bedrooms, so each resident has some private, dignified space of their own to heal from the trauma of homelessness. We plan to house over 250 men each year.

Goals

1. 1.We have the best facility in Chicago, but we’re committed to offering the best combination of supportive services, too. Twice a month, bankers teach financial literacy classes in English and Spanish. With our weekly art therapy program, art therapists work with clients to express themselves through drawing, painting, or writing, as a non-verbal way to heal from the trauma of homelessness.
2. 2.We're working to bring free barber services, a smoking cessation program, and free musical instrument therapy to our shelter clients.
3. 3.Launch a capital campaign to raise a $1 million shelter reserve fund to pay for the building’s ongoing maintenance and repairs. Nine months after the shelter's opening, we are already seeing the wear and tear of housing 70 men every day and we anticipate significant expenses in the future.
