Mission: Main Stay's mission is to enrich mind, body and spirit through powerful connections with horses, animals and nature.

Main Stay is a place where bodies are challenged, minds embrace possibilities, and spirits are renewed. Main Stay serves individuals from 3 to 90. Programs include therapeutic horsemanship and riding, equine and animal-assisted learning, and adaptive gardening. By partnering with horses, other farm animals, and nature, Main Stay's programs address a wide variety of needs including physical, cognitive, emotional, social and behavioral. Activities at the farm enrich lives in a caring, safe, and challenging environment that enables individuals to reach their full potential.

Program fees cover less than 15% of the actual cost. Main Stay relies on private foundation grants, fundraising events, and generous benefactors to keep fees affordable and attainable for those who need services most.

How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

Like many other organizations, Main Stay was forced to cancel its largest fundraising event in 2020 and experienced significantly reduced program fees which led to a reduction in income of 30% during the first six months of 2020 versus same period for previous year. Main Stay was able to secure 2 rounds of PPP loans to help preserve staff so that we were able to retain continuity and hit the ground running when it was safe.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

Main Stay ceased programming during Illinois' stay-at-home order (Apr-Jun 2020). During this time, Main Stay's staff found creative ways to continue to connect with clients with exercise and yoga videos with the animals, story time with the animals, gardening tip videos, etc--all provided at no charge to clients. At the same time, Main Stay also developed extensive COVID-19 safety protocols including check-in processes and extensive daily cleaning procedures so that we were ready to safely resume services when the stay-at-home order was lifted. Still, many of our clients couldn't return because they were unable to adhere to COVID-19 safety protocols (couldn't wear a mask, didn't understand social distancing, no impulse control, etc). In addition, school groups and other agencies were not able to send clients to participate in our equine and animal-assisted learning programs (non-riding program) because they couldn't safely transport them and keep them socially distanced.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

Main Stay quickly adapted programs to accommodate the groups that weren't able to attend in-person by creating our "Farm-to-You" remote learning series. This virtual program offered via Zoom was very popular with schools and agencies. In fact, Main Stay served close to 200 individuals virtually in 2020.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

The virtual sessions were both effective and very well-received by schools and agencies and will continue to be one of our service offerings. One of these sessions offered last year was “Create your Own Adventure” and had special ed students sharing their creative writing skills. After watching the little herd of animals frolic around the arena via Zoom, Raniah, one of the students wrote, “Raniah and a baby goat sat together as she fed him a warm bottle of milk on the most caring loving, supportive farm”. Proof that in-person or virtually, clients still feel the impact of the animals and farm.

Story of Adaptability
