Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association (GLASA) strives to Let No One Sit on the Sidelines and operates under a mission to promote and support the optimal development and well-being of youth, adults and military veterans who have a physical or visual disability through the provision of inclusive recreation, fitness and competitive sports activities. GLASA offers opportunities for empowerment through education, leadership and training in collaboration with community-based organizations. GLASA is still run by the same Executive Director, Cindy Housner, who founded the agency in 1999 in order to provide health and wellness programming to a segment of the population that was not being served in traditional physical activity and health promotion programs. What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?
We are a member of Move United, a national organization bringing together organizations like GLASA that provide sports to individuals with disabilities. GLASA Founder and Executive Director, Cindy Housner, serves on a national committee for Move United as a competitions leader. Multiple staff hold strategic partnerships including healthcare systems, nonprofit organizations and city/county service organizations. Multiple levels of staff present at conferences and community events. The Development Director brings skills in marketing and social media oversight and works in collaboration with a marketing agency to ensure that the GLASA mission and our programs are shared with the community. Our GLASA Board Chair serves in several external roles to positively impact our programs on rules committees and large organizations focused on inclusivity of sport.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
In March 2020, GLASA converted immediately to virtual programs. Then in the last year, GLASA adapted quickly when COVID rates decreased to bring back in-person programming while retaining virtual programs. This process significantly expanded services by offering a new hybrid model to ensure all athletes continued to receive services. 600 program sessions were held in 2021 to serve this dual need for both in-person and virtual programs.
