How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
Some of the changes World Renew has experienced since the COVID-19 outbreak began were surprising. While we braced for more virus variants, global lockdowns, and distribution shortages, our financial supporters responded with even greater generosity, providing help to people around the world who were suffering more hunger and poverty than before the pandemic began. Meanwhile, on the field the pandemic limited our organization’s ability to deliver programming as planned because many countries were not open for travel, and social distancing and other COVID-19 restrictions hampered our ability to serve communities. This resulted in reduced program expenses as well as new opportunities to focus spending on programming adaptations for unexpected pandemic needs.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
When COVID-19 lockdowns began in March 2020, World Renew was uniquely positioned to assist families facing more hunger and hopelessness as jobs dried up, income stopped, and food became scarce. We were able to adapt quickly to provide the families who were most affected with food and water, virus prevention, and masks, soap, sanitizer, and much more. Here are a few program samples from 2020-2021: - In Bangladesh, World Renew’s early marriage and gender-based violence initiatives prevented 13 early marriages and settled 23 family conflicts during pandemic lockdowns. - The number of project families in a West Africa program reporting that they were food insecure went from 10 percent to zero last year. Every family we surveyed reported having enough food! - Community Health Volunteers in Bangladesh counseled women individually in preventing and protecting their families from coronavirus. - A Honduran partner developed a social audit for teachers on the efficacy of online learning.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
In 2020, World Renew began to adapt to COVID-19 restrictions across our community development activities worldwide, contextualizing our outreach to meet the needs of people in their communities in 24 countries. Market vendors in Lunzu, Malawi, rely on income from selling produce and other goods to provide for their daily needs. COVID-19 restrictions make life more difficult for subsistence farmers, who often have to pick up extra work like selling at markets and along city streets to supplement their income. When people cannot gather freely, there are fewer customers and less income. Through our long-term partners, World Renew distributed COVID-19 information, installed handwashing facilities, and began a sewing project to make masks. These investments in small farmers feeds families and increases their purchasing power during the pandemic.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
In early 2020, much of the work that our North American Disaster Response Services program (DRS) was accustomed to halted with the COVID-19 outbreak. DRS used the opportunity to rethink programming and imagine new ways to help people recover from disasters safely, including the initial needs assessment. As a pilot program, World Renew worked with a long-term recovery group in Rio Grande Valley, Texas, to launch a remote needs assessment training, offering online training modules in English and Spanish. This new tool enabled them to reach a broader range of families than DRS could have contacted alone. In 2021, World Renew DRS completed remote needs assessment trainings with long-term recovery groups in Texas, Florida, and Oregon. We are grateful for the effectiveness of this new tool, and plan to continue this model as we add existing programs and work with more recovery organizations who request our assistance.

World Renew invests regularly in strategic leadership development. One of these efforts is the creation of a Staff Developer position. The position responsibilities include developing a learning program for staff called, "Onboard to Mastery." This program has been created and is currently in implementation. In addition, a leadership growth plan is being developed to support rising staff in the organization. This program will roll out in the upcoming fiscal year. World Renew has also invested in justice and equity learning across the organization by implementing personal development goals for each staff member. Through prayers, support, and financial gifts in 2021, World Renew changed more than three quarters of a million lives for good amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We equipped communities, partners, and staff with personal protection equipment (PPE) and emergency food and supplies across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. We also adapted our existing programming to meet the challenges presented by COVID-19. One example can be found in our work in Zambia. The Health Department of the United Church of Zambia (UCZ), a World Renew development partner, runs three hospitals and six smaller health centers. They are in high-risk rural areas where social distancing and isolation are nearly impossible. Anticipating a need for personal protective equipment (PPE), the UCZ, with funds from World Renew, purchased gloves, masks, face shields, shoe covers, and disinfectant sprayers for use in its health facilities. At the same time, World Renew continued to work with the UCZ’s Community Development and Social Justice Department in long-term programs by funding existing local women’s groups in a small business start-up making and selling cloth face masks. This ensured that medical-grade masks were used in the hospitals and clinics where they were most needed, and at-risk families were able to adjust their livelihoods to better themselves during the pandemic.
