Founded in 1982, Hope Clinic is an interdenominational Christian organization providing compassionate and practical help to those in need, ministering to the whole person with dignity and respect.

We are working to ensure everyone in our communities has the opportunity to serve and to be served, finding help + healing in the name of Christ. We address the need for systemic change serving one person at a time.

Do to the increased need in our community, donations increased by 85%!


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

We had to change the delivery of programs. Our hot meal program was offered as carry-out. Also our clients were unable to select their own pantry food, but we "shopped" for them and gave them packaged groceries. We also began a grocery delivery service. There was a greater need for food in the community, so we were able to increase hot meals to 6 nights a week up from 2. We also doubled and sometimes tripled the amount of food given from our pantry and fresh produce stand. Our main lobby was closed to walk-ins, but we maintained medical and dental appointments, and added telemedicine appointments where appropriate.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

We created a take-out meal program instead if in-person hot meals and increased them to 6 nights a week. We added grocery delivery as well as walk up groceries. We added telemedicine and phone appointments for both medical and social work services.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

We will continue to serve meals 6 nights a week and continue offering grocery delivery for those that have trouble coming to our pantry. Telemedicine and phone appointments will most likely continue as well.

Everyone is welcome at Hope Clinic. People often come to us struggling to gain access to the holistic care that they need. When they arrive at Hope, they are greeted with love and treated with dignity. We help them to navigate the complex world of social service and offer many of the comprehensive services they need directly on site. We can do this because we have an incredible network of donors, volunteers and community partners who leverage the maximum help for our clients, given freely, and without strings. Some of our community partners with whom we mobilize efforts include: Food Gatherers, Trinity Health, Michigan Medicine, IHA, and St. Joseph Mercy Health System.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


Throughout the pandemic, Hope Clinic has remained open to provide help, hope and healing to our neighbors in need. Our mission to serve the whole person remains the same, but the way in which we deliver that care has dramatically shifted. Last year we met over 60,000 requests for help with support from a network of volunteers who invested more than 50,000 hours serving our patients and clients. As infection rates began to rise, schools were closing and workers were being furloughed, Hope took unprecedented action. We quickly streamlined and expanded our Food program to meet the growing need. Meals switched to carry-out, and pre-packed bags of groceries were made available six (6) days a week. The number of people we were serving each week quickly tripled. We added meals, and launched grocery delivery to people in quarantine or otherwise not able to leave their home due to mobility, transportation, or high-risk issues. New patients joined us in the Medical and Dental Clinics since the start of the pandemic after many lost jobs and insurance along with it.  A convenient drive-up pharmacy was created to minimize contact and reduce the number of people in the Medical Clinic. We added capability to send patients for free COVID testing using a custom script when this was required early in the pandemic, and provided transportation assistance to patients who needed help getting to testing locations. There was a heightened risk of infection in the Dental Clinic. However, there was still tremendous need for dental care. Our team worked to try to address dental emergencies while also protecting clients and team members by limiting contact and reducing Clinic utilization. Many people shared their increased struggles with depression and anxiety. Our licensed social workers immediately began providing counseling services (i.e., teletherapy) via phone.
