    Adaptability Statement
    30 out of 30 points
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
The pandemic has slowed preventative veterinary services such as spay/neuter, worsening our nation's pet overpopulation crisis. To address these challenges, BPF hired a skilled veterinarian in April 2022. As an example of creating solutions to the pet overpopulation crisis during this unprecedented pandemic, BPF hosted and funded the first-ever FREE spay/neuter clinic in Detroit in early June, 2022. The event resulted in the sterilization of 120 owned dogs. Dogs spayed and neutered at the clinic also received age-appropriate vaccinations, including rabies and a microchip. This FREE three-day clinic, which was filled within a matter of hours, took place in partnership with the City of Detroit. Discussions are already taking place for future events in Detroit and additional underserved areas throughout the country. Additionally, BISSELL Pet Foundation's Empty the Shelters event started in Michigan and because of its success in emptying our state’s shelters, is now the largest funded adoption event in the country enabling hundreds of participating shelters to offer free or reduced-fee adoption. Empty the Shelters makes adoption affordable for prospective pet owners while supporting participating organizations with reimbursement for each pet adopted. Four events are scheduled annually with emergency events added as needed. Additionally, BPF hosts and funds the largest adoption event in the country, Empty the Shelters. This is a quarterly event that started as a weekend event. Over the past two years, to save more lives, the event has been extended to a multiple week event with emergency events added as needed. BISSELL Pet Foundation reimburses participating shelters for every pet adopted.
