This organization was impacted by COVID-19 in a way that effected their financial health in 2020. This normally would have reduced their star rating. How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

Prior to the pandemic, we had 18.5 FTE across 3 departments--Development, Enrollment, & Match Support (MS). When the pandemic started, we had to pause matching, which impacted our Enrollment & MS functions (Enrollment creates new Matches which are then handed to MS for case management). With a decrease in the volume/pace of work, we went from 18.5 FTE to 13 FTE. While we ended 2020 with a positive net revenue, it was primarily a result of this significant workforce reduction, rather than fundraising success.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

Many elements of our program came to a sudden stop when the pandemic began last March. Our School Friends Matches were immediately halted as schools closed their doors. Community-based Matches were initially not allowed to meet in-person, and even after public health restrictions loosened, there continued to be hesitation about meeting from the majority of our Bigs. And despite having more than 150 Littles on our waitlist, we were unable to create new Matches after March 2020 because we didn’t have a structure to support virtual mentoring once the Match was made. Unfortunately, this reduction in services resulted in a reduction of our workforce, with layoffs and positions left vacant among the staff most connected to the creation of new Matches. Our lean staff team was able to maintain and support our existing Matches, which kept us nimble and flexible as things shifted in 2020. But our waitlist kept growing, as did the time that Littles spent waiting.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

Over the last year, we’ve accomplished several things necessary to stabilize our program and resume matching: Created a new framework for Community-based Matches with strategies focused on helping Matches connect online or in-person Redesigned our volunteer requirements, increasing access and flexibility with mentoring Built an online Activity Toolkit with resources to help Matches connect in-person or virtually Formed a Board-led Program Committee focused on driving diversity, equity, and inclusion in our volunteer recruitment Hired a Match Support Specialist to support new School Friends and Community-based Matches This rebuilding and reimagining of our work was crucial, and when combined with improving conditions from the pandemic, has allowed us to slowly resume Community-based matching and launch our Virtual School Friends program with 30 Littles.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

We will continue to offer virtual opportunities for matches to stay connected.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


Many elements of our program came to a sudden stop when the pandemic began in March. Matches were unable to meet in-person, which is central to mentoring. Despite having more than 150 Littles on our waitlist, we were unable to create new Matches, because we didn’t have a structure for virtual mentoring to plug them into once the Match was made. Yet in this time of isolation, it was abundantly clear that the mentoring relationship was more important than ever before to reduce the impact and likelihood of experiencing trauma for our Littles. Given the uncertainty of the pandemic and its effect on in-person match outings and activities, our focus in 2022 is to create new Matches in our Community-based program by offering virtual solutions, and deepen the impact of mentoring for existing Matches. We will achieve this by expanding our Match engagement activities for our Community-based Matches to create more quality shared time and accelerate the creation of new Matches, and providing increased support to Littles and their families through the pandemic.
