How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

The St. Paul Jewish Federation mobilized its staff and volunteer resources to launch a COVID relief campaign to assist our partner agencies which were adversely impacted by COVID-19. Despite the challenges of having to work remotely, we were able to raise and distribute more than $400,000 to local agencies. We did apply and receive PPP funding which enabled us to maintain our staff levels to achieve this result. We needed to adapt to working remotely and adopt new technology to assist us in this transition.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

We had to pivot a number of our programs from being held in person to virtual. It also limited our ability to meet personally with donors to have meaningful discussions about our work and the impact that their support has for our organization and community.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

We changed the way that we traditionally offered programming from in person to virtual. This allowed us to also reach a broader audience than we may have traditionally reached.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

We will continue offering virtual programming as appropriate as well as hybrid models of virtual and in person programming.

Describe an investment in leadership

We pay dues to our national organization which provides training and support to our staff and board including a free subscription to BoardSource for each board member. We also utilize the resources of BoardSource including surveying board members to identify areas where they need more training, and sharing articles about best practices for boards, committees, volunteers, etc. We conduct an orientation meeting for all board members which reviews the mission of the agency, our programs, responsibilities of board members including how to serve as ambassadors on behalf of the agency, We conduct a separate training on understanding financial statements as other topics based on the finding of the board survey. New board chairs attend a national conference with the CEO focused on the board chair's responsibility as well as the CEO-Chair relationship. We train our campaign volunteers on the art and skills of fundraising and serving as ambassadors on behalf of the organization.

The Federation is seen as the central planning, convening, fundraising, and community-building organization for the greater St. Paul Jewish community. By utilizing hundreds of community volunteers and partnering with more than a dozen local, national and international organizations, we are able to further our mission. In 2020, we released a demographic study of the Twin Cities Jewish community which is being used as a resource to assist in understanding unmet needs how to respond to them both from an agency level and community level. We work with our beneficiary organizations and others to identify common concerns, share knowledge and develop strategies to strengthen our local Jewish community.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


In the past year, the Federation was able to keep its stakeholders engaged in our work. Due to COVID and the need for social distancing, we provided the staff the resources they needed to work remotely while still being effective. We transitioned from face-to-face meetings to virtual meetings including those with board members, committee members, donors, volunteers, and other stakeholders. We made wellness call to our stakeholders and conducted a successful COVID relief campaign, raising more than $400,000 on behalf of our partner agencies,
