Mission

For over forty years, Esperanza United has mobilized the Latin@ community to end gender-based violence. Latina-founded and Latina-led, we ground our work in the community, providing direct support to young people, families, and survivors where we were founded in Minnesota while also working with Latino communities across the country and in Puerto Rico to ensure survivors receive quality, culturally-specific services.

Vision

From a humble but mighty beginning as an emergency shelter created by a small group of persevering Latinas, Esperanza United has grown into the largest, most well-respected Latin@ organization in the country focusing on ending gender-based violence. One in three women in the United States experiences domestic violence in their lifetime. This rate is approximately the same for women across most racial and socioeconomic groups – including Latin@s. Just because the rates are the same, that doesn’t mean the solutions are. We need culturally competent strategies to prevent abuse from happening in the first place and then, when it does, to ensure all survivors get the support they need. Effective Latin@ advocacy requires a deep understanding and appreciation of Latin@ cultures, histories, religions, and oppression in the United States.
