VFW Foundation leadership is encouraged to seek out both formal and informal professional development opportunities. To this end, VFW leaders have attended numerous charity-related workshops and symposiums (in-person and remotely due to COVID) as well as other events that focus on the challenges to our population group (service personnel, veterans, and their families). For example, after such a meeting our Director most usually convenes a staff meeting to go over key learned principles and how these can be put into practice. Additionally, our organization, enlisted Gallup to conduct an employee engagement survey the results of which helped us improve staff well being, manager development, performance, etc.

What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?
The VFW Foundation seeks to do everything possible to expand the scope and impact of our outreach. Not only do we maintain working relationships with other veterans service organizations such as The Wounded Warrior Project, but we also have a close working relationship with numerous corporate partners. In particular, we have created a national program called Uniting to Combat Hunger (UTCH) with Humana and Feeding America. UTCH seeks to address veterans who are facing food insecurity, especially because of the COVID pandemic. Food insecurity is a problem that may affect 1 in 8 people in America, though sadly 25% of active-duty military and Reserve members have had to rely on food bank donations to feed their families. Additionally, through a network of 6,000+ VFW Posts nationwide, we promote the dissemination of our mission and program/service outreach that filters down to the local community level.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
In the greater environment of existing within the COVID-19 pandemic, the VFW Foundation has naturally adapted in many significant ways. First, our staff has learned to function effectively through the use of off-site communication tools such as remote conferencing. Additionally, staff members were able to assume job duties of other employees who had been affected by COVID. We also had to modify some outreach programs and services to make them more responsive to our target population within the scope of COVID. In fact, demand grew for these programs and services because of COVID, especially among those individuals who were affected in adverse economical ways by the pandemic. Our Uniting to Combat Hunger (UTCH) campaign that addresses food insecurity among veterans had to be modified away from in-person events such as gleanings and food collection drives into ones that centered around financial donations.
