To determine causation, we take the outcomes we observe and subtract an estimate of the outcomes that would have happened even without the program (i.e., counterfactual outcomes).
We estimate the amount of years a child was regularly read to as a results of the the nonprofit's work by comparing its reported figures to the amount the child would have been read to without the nonprofit's help (the “counterfactual”). Without the nonprofit, some caregivers would still regularly read to their child. These counterfactual successes must be netted out of the successes we observe. Otherwise, we would be attributing a change (benefits received) to the nonprofit when it would have happened anyway. Few nonprofits estimate the counterfactual themselves, so we construct our own counterfactual estimate based on research and educated assumptions.

During the pandemic, Book Harvest acted quickly to modify core services to create more effective partnerships with our key participants. Over the last couple of years, we made adjustments to our programs, service strategies, and partnerships to ensure we were taking preventive and proactive measures defined by a dual imperative to keep learning alive. We worked hard to provide more books that portray all children: all backgrounds, languages, abilities, and perspectives, including stories by and about people of color. We are offering new partnerships with parents: one-on-one navigation services to overcome barriers to applying for pre-k and kindergarten; group trainings to gain skills for engaging with schools; the hiring of parents to network with other parents. We also began transforming everyday community places into informal learning spaces; story times, literacy activities, and lots of books at Laundromats, barbershops, health clinics, and other community spaces. We are sending brand new, culturally diverse books directly to the homes of parents so they can continue to fuel early language development. We forged new partnerships with child care providers to ensure that the children in their care could take home backpacks of books to fuel bedtime stories and home libraries. In a year of unprecedented challenges, we practiced careful fiscal stewardship, responsive programming, strong Board management, and skilled staff engagement to emerge stronger than ever.
