Pandemic Response

Due to the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, we give charities such as this one the opportunity to share the story of COVID's impact on them. Charities may submit their own pandemic responses through their nonprofit portal.

Lost and Found Association reported being impacted by COVID-19 in the following ways:
  • Program Delivery

  • Fundraising Capacity

  • Administrative Capacity

How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

Lost&Found was fortunate to receive a large-scale donation just prior to the start of the pandemic. However, all operations of the organization (programs, fundraising, administrative) were effectively shut down and forced to move virtually as a result of the pandemic. Financially, this did not ultimately harm the organization, but without support of the large donation and Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) funds, the organization would likely have suffered tremendously and/or not survived.

How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

All student-facing programs shut down in the face of the pandemic. Any mental health education and prevention programming was moved to virtual environments, which did increase Lost&Found's digital footprint and created new ways for the organization to engage with young adults struggling with mental health.

How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

Lost&Found successfully shifted all operations to remote, virtual work within the first two months of the pandemic and successfully operated and grew the organization's program footprint through new investments in digital content creation and fundraising tools. This allowed the organization to rapidly expand its program reach, despite not being able to meet with our target audience (young adults) face-to-face.

Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

Our digital content creation work, which now reaches over 2.5 million people throughout the globe with mental health and suicide prevention tools, is now a permanent fixture of our organization and a leading way for Lost&Found to engage with young adults and their immediate support networks. Additionally, the pandemic forced Lost&Found to adapt its Campus Chapter model to an "advocacy first" program strategy. This meant providing more training and more content and immediate ways to engage with the organization as a mental health advocate, rather than forcing advocates to begin by forming community chapters where progress was less obvious or immediate. This has made Lost&Found a highly innovative, successful case study in shifting mental health and prevention programs in the United States, covering a full array of young adult experiences (student, friend, peer, family, member, employee).
