This organization was impacted by COVID-19 in a way that effected their financial health in 2020. This normally would have reduced their star rating. Due to the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, we give charities such as this one the opportunity to share the story of COVID's impact on them, and doing this pauses our revision of their rating. Charities may submit their own pandemic responses through their nonprofit portal.
HOUSE OF HEROES INC reported being impacted by COVID-19 in the following ways:
Program Delivery
Fundraising Capacity
Grants Received
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
Donations to our organization, HOHCT were down 50% and volunteers were also down 60-70%. We still were able to complete a few homes (9 veteran projects) and held a food drive for 100 veterans for a week's worth of food.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
Due to social distancing and working with older veterans we had to choose all outside work. We were still able to complete half as many Veteran homes as the previous year.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
We created outdoor sinks for every job, had wipes and cleaner available for all tools and all volunteers had to wear masks. We did less work at each home and asked for far less volunteers. We also took $8000 and did a food drive for 100 veterans for a week's worth of food.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
We love the outdoor sinks and will continue to use them at every job along with all the cleaning protocols we purchased for each veteran project.

Raising Awareness
Community Building
HOHCT has recently become aligned with the Carpenters Union Local 326 to repair more Veteran homes. With their membership of 500+ tradesmen we are able to tap into their skills and experiences to complete more veteran home repairs. We are also working with Stanley Black & Decker to build capacity in the trades by offering mini classes and experiences for middle school and high school students to learn about the trades. Hopefully through our role models students will have a desire to continue an education in a trade field once they leave HS. As a rule, HOHCT works with companies to provide team building opportunities for their employees at each event.
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
We have worked very hard to find more company sponsors and increase our team building projects. During the pandemic these opportunities were not available and the number of projects was at half of what we usually do. We wrote a grant from Stanley Black & Decker and found some creative fundraising techniques that helped us raise some much needed donations. Through these efforts we were able to secure a used truck, many more tools and new companies to work with us each month. We are on track to provide the most amount services to Veterans in 2022.
