We dramatically improve their experience and change their outcomes so that these kids can thrive in safe, loving families and supportive communities where they belong. We Connect: We are constantly looking for ways to connect people to our mission, make strong connections with our team members, and stay connected to the call for justice for vulnerable children. We Say Thank You: We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this work and we take time to express our gratitude for our partners, the leaders we work with, our investors, the families who take children into their homes, families who support those families, the social workers and those who volunteer their time towards our mission. We Keep Score: Everybody plays differently when we're keeping score. This organization was impacted by COVID-19 in a way that effected their financial health in 2020. This normally would have reduced their star rating. Due to the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, we give charities such as this one the opportunity to share the story of COVID's impact on them, and doing this pauses our revision of their rating. Charities may submit their own pandemic responses through their nonprofit portal.
Americas Kids Belong Inc. reported being impacted by COVID-19 in the following ways:
Program Delivery
Administrative Capacity
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
Despite budget shortfalls, to which many of our team made personal sacrifices to keep things moving, we kept AKB from going into the negative financially.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
The challenges presented by the pandemic made the situations for many of the kids in child welfare more difficult. There was a significant increase in kids being removed from their families. In some of the states in which we work, we weren't able to deliver on one of our signature programs -- the I Belong Project, a video storytelling project to help match kids in foster care who are eligible for adoption with families. We adapted, in part, by implementing COVID safety measures. For example, instead of hosting a video shoot for a group of kids, we drove to group and foster homes to capture individual videos. Everyone was masked, except for the child while he or she was filmed. We used sanitation supplies and other recommended safety protocols.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
Despite the pandemic, the organization followed through on its plan to hire our first CEO. Todd Kinzle came to AKB with a long list of accomplishments, including co-founding and running a successful start-up and serving as a senior-level strategist for a Fortune 500 company.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
We initiated Zoom-based foster parent informational trainings. They experienced such strong turnout and engagement that we decided to maintain them post-pandemic.

America's Kids Belong works collaboratively with the government, faith, creative and business communities to solve the foster care crisis in the U.S. We engaged the business sphere and 85 new businesses got involved with their time, talent, or treasure to make a difference for foster families and youth aging out of foster care. Once again, in 2020, we engaged the faith sphere. We launched our Made to Belong Trauma Curriculum for Faith leaders and 497 leaders, parents, and volunteers gained understanding and practical application. We were excited that throughout these spheres 505 volunteers donated 2027 hours to make a difference with our I Belong Project, Dream Makers Project, fund raising events, faith sphere events, and through administrative assistance. One of America's Kids Belong signature programs is the I Belong Project. With the help of the creative community, the I Belong Project is telling stories. Actually, through the I Belong Project, kids in foster care are telling their own story. By giving these kids and sibling groups a face and a voice, we give them a better chance--a 9x better chance--of being seen, receiving an inquiry and being adopted. In 2020 with safety measures implemented in response to COVID, we had 28 days of filming with 183 kids legally free for adoption. Over the year 1,702 inquiries were made through the AKB website and we celebrated that 122 kids were placed in pre-adoptive homes.Another signature program is Dream Makers Project, which provides support for youth that are aging out or have already emancipated from the foster care system. This year emancipated youth in 26 different states (up 44%) were impacted through our Dream Makers Project. Through the investment of their time and their finances, individuals, churches, and businesses helped to fulfill 270 Dreams (up 27% from 2019). 422 total youth were served with at least 20 receiving next-level impact through internships or career training.
