NAFSA was formed to restore & support Native American food systems nationally, in New Mexico & Canada through education, advocacy & policy, while promoting better health & creating economic opportunities.

Indigenous SeedKeepers Network nourishes & assists the growing Seed Sovereignty Movement across North America. As a national network, we leverage resources & cultivate solidarity & communication within the matrix of regional grass-roots tribal seed sovereignty projects. We accomplish this mission by providing educational resources, mentorship training, outreach & advocacy support on seed policy issues, & organizing national & regional events & convenings to connect many communities who are engaging in this vital work. We support the creation of solutions-oriented programs for adaptive, resilient seed systems within tribal communities to enhance the creative capacity to continue to evolve as the face of our Mother Earth changes.ISKN assists communities who are working towards Rematriation of their precious seed relatives. Working cross-culturally with many stakeholders, including native farmers & gardeners & representatives from tribal communities, institutions, & organizations who have seed collections, & also other people who can help facilitate and lay out the needed framework to assist in these seeds finding their way home. As a Native-led organization that serves Native communities across the country, NAFSA’s priorities and direction are determined by the communities we serve through community-based listening sessions as well as through election to our Board of Directors (Leadership Council). In all of NAFSA’s programs, we work alongside community partners with each of our projects directly informed and shaped by processes of listening and responding to the specific needs of each unique community. When a project has reached completion, we again engage in community-based listening to gain feedback that informs our next cycle of grassroots initiatives.

Briefly describe a recent change that your organization made in response to feedback from the people you serve.
In 2020, NAFSA received an unprecedented number of requests for seeds from Indigenous families. To meet our communities needs, NAFSA’s Indigenous Seedkeepers Network (ISKN) quickly mobilized Phase I of an Indigenous Seed Drive to empower families in the creation of “Hope and Resilience” gardens and successfully distributed 731+ seed bundles to Indigenous families and organizations. By June 2021, NAFSA had an additional 197 requests for seeds and as a result have launched a Phase II Seed Drive.
