SPECIAL PROJECTS URGENT FAMILY CRISIS SOLUTIONS – fielding and resourcing a wide array of one-off crisis needs that arise, often able to refer and guide families to existing communal non-profits when appropriate WIDOW SUPPORT NETWORK – pre-holiday flower bouquet delivery, shaloch manot, Chanuka gifts, Rosh Hashana cards SCHOOL SUPPORT - ensuring that no child goes without essentials. Shoes, boots coats, backpacks, school supplies, and many other seasonally needed items. FINANCIAL LITERACY EDUCATION - providing financial literacy to families who have never been trained in the area of finance. Including budgeting, expense reduction, and debt reduction

f course, this has not been a typical year. When the world shut down due to Covid-19, Detroit Chesed stepped up. As the call to action was “stay home to save lives” Detroit Chesed identified new and unique needs in the community. Detroit Chesed swiftly swung into action, assembling an army of volunteers that hit the ground running on a number of unprecedented programs for unprecedented times. These initiatives include: Covid-19 Community Hotline – Still in operation, the Community Hotline has taken thousands of calls from community members seeking information about Covid testing and treatment. Community Resource Guide - With so many families suddenly facing financial uncertainty, Detroit Chesed published a Community Resource Guide to educate the community about available resources. The guide was mailed to over 5,000 families. Grocery Shopping and Delivery – What normally takes months to build out, Detroit Chesed did in a matter of days. Working together with One Stop Kosher, Detroit Chesed set up a website to order groceries from Detroit’s only all-Kosher grocery. Volunteers packed orders for thousands of families, providing a choice of contactless curbside pick up or delivery. The One Stop Shopping and Delivery service is still in operation and continues to be utilized by the elderly and vulnerable, free of charge. Passover Provisions – Our community faced a unique challenge during quarantine. Outreach Calls - Detroit Chesed volunteers have made over 1,500 outreach calls to people living alone and those in the vulnerable populations. Spreading Cheer - To spread joy in the community, over 300 flower bouquets were dropped off to homes of those isolated alone within the community.
