Our library of video and narrative format patient stories continues to grow, featuring 25 video stories with accompanying narrative, 10 narrative-only stories, and two narrative stories with audio. But during the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to adapt: We could no longer film patient storytellers in person, so we had to come up with a way to film our patient stories remotely. We did this by investing in video equipment we could send to each storyteller and created written and video instructions for self-taping. Our new, pandemic-era filming process now includes shipping all audiovisual equipment to our patient storytellers and guiding them through the set-up and filming process. In addition to the video and written instructions we provide, our interviewer and video producer meet with the patient storytellers for about an hour via Zoom or FaceTime to help with technical set-up and making sure the camera, sound, and lighting are all working properly. Once everything is ready to go, we begin our interview. Afterwards, we provide shipping for the equipment to either return to our video producer or go on to the next storyteller. Our continued goal in storytelling is for the diversity of patient stories to reflect the broad range of affected individuals, clinical presentations, clinical courses, and outcomes. The flexibility provided by our new self-filming process means more access to more kinds of patients, who are now able to share their stories from the comfort of their own homes.
