Southern Oregon Climate Action Now

Mission

The mission of Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) is to promote awareness and understanding about the science, causes, and consequences of climate change. We work with individuals and organizations in Southern Oregon, statewide, nationally, and internationally to advocate for both personal and governmental actions that reduce the emissions and atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gasses. Within this framework, we are committed to supporting climate solutions that address the social injustices that have undermined vulnerable communities for many decades and that still plague our society today.

Vision

We seek a reduction in the global atmospheric greenhouse gas concentration to 350 parts per million Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). We achieve this through science education, community engagement, and policy advocacy.

Goals

1.SOCAN is recognized as a go-to resource for climate change information and science education throughout Southern Oregon. By enhancing its community presence through events, workshops, and partnerships, SOCAN will foster widespread engagement. Expanded educational outreach with schools and universities will bring climate science to classrooms and inspire future leaders.
2.SOCAN is recognized as a regional leader in forming, building, and maintaining partnerships and collaborations with community organizations and individuals. To advance this work, we are developing a Climate Science Advisory Panel of local experts who will provide research support, technical validation, and guidance for citizen science and municipal initiatives.
3.SOCAN's government relations at every level are credible and effective. We will continue to scale up our civic-engagement educational components to encourage the next generation of policy advocates to make their voices heard in promoting climate-conscious policy at the municipal, state and federal levels.
