The pandemic has proven challenging for our work and particularly challenging for the workers we strive to help. In many projects we had to curtail or suspend in-person fieldwork due either to physical risk to our investigators or workers or to comply with travel restrictions.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
By necessity, we successfully transitioned all of our company engagement to video calls without a drop in participation. In fact, we saw increased participation when we switched to video for our work in India, allowing for more engagement with companies located outside of the United States.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
While we hope to return to more in-person meetings, our video engagements have borne fruit, and we will continue to use this technology in our future engagement.

As part of our programmatic strategy and mobilization efforts, we engage directly with other nonprofits, public and private sector organizations, and individual philanthropists—among others—supporting or working to combat labor and environmental abuse in global supply chains. We are currently developing strategies and partnerships with peer organizations to access public and other larger funding opportunities. In addition, we are actively building relationships with donors in the climate and environmental justice space.
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
Due to the increasingly authoritarian and nationalistic approach of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government in India, many donors who fund work in India, including our work, have come under intense scrutiny for their work on human rights and child labor. The Modi government’s recent amendment to the Foreign Contributions Regulation Act (FCRA)—enacted in 1979 to regulate foreign donations to local individuals and associations, meant to assuage foreign interference in Indian affairs—gave the government tighter control over the receipt and utilization of foreign funds by NGOs. Using this tool, the government has been tightening controls on NGOs and foreign donors working in human rights. This includes most foundations working in our space. While we will continue to work in sectors and areas with the greatest need, including India, we are pivoting to expand our programmatic and fundraising efforts geographically and sectorally, to reflect our global programming and mandate. We are also working to access new partnerships and pools of funding that are not subject to political constraints.
