With the highest prevalence rate in North America and the Caribbean, this disease is impacting thousands of lives and placing a significant burden on families and the healthcare system. The People's Diabetes Foundation (PDF) is working tirelessly to change this reality. We need your help. The Problem: Belize faces a staggering diabetes crisis. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), over 31,500 Belizeans live with diabetes, a number projected to increase dramatically. Limited access to education and resources leaves many struggling to manage their condition, leading to devastating health complications and diminished quality of life. The Corozal District, in particular, faces a disproportionately high incidence of this disease. Our Solution: The People's Diabetes Foundation Founded by Judith Mendez, a registered nurse living with Type 2 diabetes, the People's Diabetes Foundation is dedicated to providing enhanced diabetes education, awareness, and support to the people of Belize. Our vision is to become an international model for diabetes education, prevention, and control in rural communities. Our Pilot Program: Diabetes Education Resource Our pilot program focuses on the country of Belize and takes a multi-pronged approach: • Community Awareness: We conduct monthly educational activities, distribute materials, host "healthy community" events, and partner with local NGOs and media to raise awareness about diabetes, its symptoms, treatment, and prevention. • Support for Newly Diagnosed: We collaborate with healthcare providers to offer comprehensive support to newly diagnosed individuals, including education on self-care, nutrition, medication management, and access to essential resources. Our program aims to empower individuals to effectively manage their diabetes and improve their long-term health outcomes. • Long-Term Impact: We are committed to building sustainable programs by training healthcare educators, developing educational materials, and working towards becoming a recognized non-profit organization. Your Impact: A generous donation of $25,000 will be instrumental in supporting our pilot program and making a tangible difference in the lives of Belizeans. Your contribution will directly fund: • Educational materials and resources: Empowering individuals with the knowledge they need to manage their diabetes. • Community outreach events: Raising awareness and promoting healthy lifestyles. • Support for newly diagnosed patients: Providing critical resources and guidance for managing their condition. • Program development and evaluation: Ensuring the long-term sustainability and effectiveness of our efforts. Our Objectives and Activities: We have a clear plan to achieve our mission, focusing on three key objectives: 1. Educating Belize on Diabetes Prevalence: Through newsletters, awareness events, community panels, and stakeholder discussions, we aim to increase understanding of diabetes and its impact. 2. Supporting Newly Diagnosed Diabetics: By partnering with local hospitals and physicians, we will provide comprehensive support and education to 120 newly diagnosed patients. 3. Fostering Sustainable Organizational Development: We are working to secure fiscal sponsorship and become a 501(c)(3) non-profit to ensure the long-term viability of our programs. Budget: Our detailed budget outlines how your contribution will be used to maximize our impact. We are committed to transparency and accountability in our financial management. (See detailed budget breakdown in original prompt.) Join Us: Diabetes is a serious threat, but it is not insurmountable. By partnering with the People's Diabetes Foundation, you can empower individuals, strengthen communities, and help us create a healthier future for Belize. Your donation, no matter the size, will make a significant difference. Donate today and be a part of the solution! https://www.peoplesdiabetesfoundation.org/ Contact Us: People's Diabetes Foundation 1725 Ocean Ave Unit 226 Santa Monica Ca 90401 323-304-2861 fred@peoplesdiabetesfoundation.org Together, we can make a difference in the fight against diabetes in Belize.
Vision
To bring Awareness and Prevention, we had to get the discussion going, we opened an office and did free blood glucose testing, provide access to glucose testing supplies and provided room for individual to feel free and comfortable to know more about this disease as well as the impact their circumstance has on self-care. We also felt it was important to go to the schools and start on early generation campaign level and reached out to the rural areas and their communities. We held outreach events and part take in health fairs whenever and wherever we can. November 14 is global World Diabetes Day (WDD) and our biggest day for Awareness and prevention campaign.
Goals
- 1.As an NGO dependent on donations for our resources, our work would not achieve sustainability if we could not meet the need that our organization is already providing to its urban and rural communities and at a national level. It would signify defaulting on the very challenge, we seek to support in the diabetes global health crisis.
- 2.When these resources do not remain consistent and accessible the credibility of trust and assistance loses it’s worth, we then will loss and confidence in supporting the very mission we seek.
- 3.Sustainability in its context hinges on economic, social and environment impact. This project seeks to achieve a long-term sustainable program focus on providing access to care through awareness prevention, education and support to those living with diabetes. Gender equality is the human right of all gender to bear equality, opportunities and responsibility.
