How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

We applied and received the PPP loan and forgiveness to allow us to remain staffed during the pandemic. It is critical to retain staff and not have to rehire and train once the pandemic ceases, especially with the current climate of employment shortages. We were forced to temporarily discontinue some of our pediatric therapy and adult services during the pandemic creating losses in revenue from reimbursements from insurance providers and state funding. While donations remained steady, the program and service revenue losses and increased costs of enhanced sanitation policies and masking/shield additions have challenged our operation.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

Pediatric Therapies transitioned to telehealth therapy for some disciplines, but this model was not effective for all types of therapy. Our adult day services and job training programs were closed for nearly one year for the safety and wellness of the individuals with disabilities we serve. Our client base is medically fragile with compromised immune systems.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

Pediatric Therapy transitioned to a telehealth model for Speech, Occupational and Behavior therapies for those children who could adapt. Those who were unable received encouraging phone calls and letters to keep contact for when services could be reinstated. Many of the children served have returned to in-person therapy care, but some of the more medically fragile and immune compromised have not. Adults in our residential care were provided computers so they could stay connected to family and friends via zoom, and support their mental health.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

While we understand reimbursement rates for telehealth therapy will be reduced, we intend to continue this model for specific exceptions so a child still has access to our services when sick, lack of transportation, etc. Many of the enhanced sanitation practices will continue, like sanitized fogging of our therapy rooms and of vehicles serviced in our job training auto detailing program. We also decided we will maintain a virtual component to our in-person fundraising events to continue the reach to our donor base not available to attend in-person.

Our strong marketing efforts (social media, tv, radio, print, website) and media relationships (tv, radio, print) help us raise awareness about our mission, encourage support and advertise for events and job postings. Providing disability etiquette training and ability awareness workshops to business community staffing has brought better sensitivity to those with disabilities in the workforce and helped frontline workers relate more confidently with their clients who are disabled. Capper Foundation also participates as a member partner in a number of disability advocacy groups at all levels - local, state and federal - to encourage better policy formation for service providers and individuals with disabilities.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


Supporting individuals we serve to the fullest was necessary during the pandemic. Capper Foundation upgraded technology in order to transition pediatric therapies to telehealth therapy for children who could adapt and implemented virtual meetings for staff and families served. We restructured our day service programing for adults with disabilities to be implemented in their homes after temporarily closing facility day services. Sanitation practices were amped up to include fogging systems, disposable masks and face shields, plexiglass barriers installed, social distancing practiced, etc. Adapting was our only option to care for our clients, as many are medically fragile and have immune compromises.
