Goals

1. 1.Our biggest priority this year has been fighting wrongful medical debt collections. In a state with 7.898 licensed attorneys, there are just six lawyers fighting against plainly and demonstrably illegal medical debt collection efforts. All work for KLS. In the last two years, these attorneys have represented 14 clients in eight Kansas Counties.
2. 2.Our second biggest goal is to fight against wrongful evictions. KLS works to prevent homelessness and increase housing stability. In Wyandotte County alone, nine households face an eviction filing every single day, a rate that has increased by 50 percent between 2019 and 2023. Our legal services provide a critical defense against this threat, ensuring families can remain in their homes.
3. 3.Clinic outreach is our third most important goal. This means going to where our clients need us. Expungement provides individuals with the opportunity for redemption and a fresh start by sealing their criminal record. It’s about empowerment and opening doors that have been closed. With a clean record, they can do more for others and be liberated.
