Library membership donations decreased by 35% and meeting room rental income was virtually eliminated. We were able to finish ahead due to a few generous major donations, but our typical donation model was significantly hindered by the pandemic.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

All of our programs had to move online with virtual book clubs as well as e-learning and virtual story time sessions to keep our community engaged and to support our children's learning outcomes.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

Desert Foothills Library has learned to be nimble and adaptive with our programming and community services. We've implemented COVID-19 safety protocols in our library so that our patrons can visit us in-person again and have multiple levels of programming options so that we can continue to adapt in the future with news of future variants including in person, outdoor, hybrid, and virtual programming options based upon current CDC and local health guidelines.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

We have significantly expanded our virtual services and will likely continue to have Zoom book clubs open to patrons as well as future plans for an expanded outdoor space to offer outdoor programming in our beautiful Arizona weather.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


During the pandemic, Desert Foothills Library’s multigenerational programming moved online with physical learning resources provided via a drive-thru service. Our online programming included Zoom book clubs and classes to keep our patrons connected with each other, preventing the isolation that particularly affected our seniors during the pandemic. For youth, we offered STEAM programs through community partners like “NASA at your Library” and Storyboard That as well as original content such as online story times and digital learning tools to help beleaguered parents. Now that the library is fully open, we are ramping up our services to meet the educational gap left by the pandemic with plans to offer 200 children and youth events in critical learning areas.
