Northeast Animal Shelter did have to furlough a large number of staff while we closed from March through May 2020 and were fortunate to receive a PPP loan, which enabled us to bring back all staff once we resumed operations.
As a result of the pandemic, Northeast Animal Shelter choose to close for two months (March-May 2020) to protect the safety and well being of our staff, volunteers and community. But closing the Shelter also meant that our transport and adoption programs had to be discontinued as well, which eliminated one of our primary sources of income. Based on the number of adoptions conducted prior to the pandemic, we estimate NEAS likely lost over $333,000 during that period.
Once we resumed operations, we shifted to an adoption-by-appointment model to limit the number of people in our building at one time. Although this reduced the number of adoptions that could be conducted each day, this process enabled us to find homes for harder to place and older pets who often are passed over for younger cats and dogs.
During the height of the pandemic, NEAS launched our Community Pet Food Bank to distribute donated food to food banks as well as directly to members of our community who are struggling to feed their pets. To date, we have distributed over 365,000 pet meals.

Northeast Animal Shelter (NEAS) is one of New England's largest nonprofit animal shelters. Our mission is to help as many animals, and people, as possible by providing humane care and resources for homeless and owned pets in need. Since opening our doors in 1976, we have placed over 150,000 dogs and cats with loving families. In 1994, Northeast Animal Shelter implemented an innovative animal relocation program — one of the first of its kind — to help reduce the nation’s pet overpopulation problem at local animal shelters across the country. Since it’s inception, this program has transported over 125,000 cats and dogs to New England and placed them in responsible, adoptive homes. We also promote compassion for all animals through our community programs and partnerships which focus on strengthening the human-animal bond to keep people and pets together.

NEAS is affiliated with the MSPCA-Angell. This affiliation enables us to connect thousands more pets with adopters than either organization could accomplish on its own. NEAS’ animal relocation network, combined with the MSPCA-Angell’s veterinary and adoption center resources, works to protect the largest number of animals possible. Our affiliation not only provides hands-on care to homeless animals in need, but we also work together to offer access to affordable care to pet owners through our community veterinary clinics and through our community outreach teams.

Jan. 6, 2021 – In what leaders of both organizations hail as a win for animals and the people who love them, the MSPCA-Angell and Northeast Animal Shelter (NEAS) today announced an affiliation that will allow the two organizations to work together to place more pets than ever into loving homes. With the new relationship, the MSPCA-Angell will take on the oversight and management of NEAS, while NEAS will continue to operate as a separate organization, maintaining its name and Salem headquarters. NEAS also has a new board of directors, consisting of one member of NEAS’ former board and five individuals from the MSPCA-Angell’s senior leadership.
