Mission: Ayuda's mission is to advocate for low-income immigrants through direct legal, social and language services, training and outreach in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. We envision a community where all immigrants succeed and thrive in the United States.

Ayuda believes justice should have no barriers. Ayuda's expert and dedicated professionals help immigrants from anywhere in the world navigate the immigration and justice systems and access the social safety net. This comprehensive and welcoming approach breaks down barriers, helps those in need, and strengthens communities.

Ayuda's clients are some of our most marginalized and highly resilient community members. Many of Ayuda's clients come to the U.S fleeing violence in their home country. Many of the individuals who turn to Ayuda for help are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and/or other crimes.

In 2021, Ayuda provided legal and social services to 2,800 immigrants from 105 countries.

Ayuda is a 501(c)(3) organization, with an IRS ruling year of 1973, and donations are tax-deductible.

Donors have expressed extreme concern about the use of their personal information by charities and the desire to have this information kept confidential. The exchanging and sale of lists for telemarketing and the mass distribution of "junk mail," among other things, can be minimized if the charity assures the privacy of its donors. Privacy policies are assigned to one of the following categories:

  • Yes: This charity has a written donor privacy policy published on its website, which states unambiguously that (1) it will not share or sell a donor's personal information with anyone else, nor send donor mailings on behalf of other organizations or (2) it will only share or sell personal information once the donor has given the charity specific permission to do so.

  • Opt-out: The charity has a written privacy policy published on its website which enables donors to tell the charity to remove their names and contact information from lists the charity shares or sells. How a donor can have themselves removed from a list differs from one charity to the next, but any and all opt-out policies require donors to take specific action to protect their privacy.

How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

In 2020, Ayuda’s annual major fundraising event (“Standing with Immigrants”) was cancelled due to the pandemic. Ayuda held this event virtually in 2021 out of an abundance of caution for our constituents and community. Given the event’s being virtual and the current economy, Ayuda received reduced revenue for this event. In addition, Ayuda received several grants in FY 21 that are anticipated to be one-time grants in response to the pandemic. We are actively seeking and applying for new funding opportunities, but with local and state governments reporting revenue shortfalls and foundations focusing on supporting existing grantees, it is challenging to locate new funding sources. The ongoing operations that support Ayuda’s overall excellence requires sustained investment. Yet, our programs and services are funded by many sources, while the core of our operations relies on too thin a sliver of support. That is why flexible Mission Support is our top priority for philanthropy.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

We were fortunate that none of our programs were forced to shut-down during the pandemic (see question below) and we were able to continue providing our services at maximum capacity. However, due to COVID-19, Ayuda was unable to provide an in-person events or gatherings key to donor stewardship. So we got creative, and held a 6-part speaker series from 20202-2021. Additionally, we were unable to support in-person volunteering during the past 20 months.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

Ayuda has provided nearly all services remotely since March 2020, and have expanded our emergency assistance program. Our Immigration Legal Services Program has provided remote consultations and long-term representation; Pro Bono Program transitioned to provide remote clinics with support by pro bono partners, and our Domestic Violence/Family Law program has provided a remote clinic where survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and/or stalking and can receive family law consultations, long-term representation and social services without a wait period. Ayuda’s Social Services Program has provided enhanced support to clients through providing food, baby and infant supplies, and emergency cash assistance. Ayuda has also provided telephonic mental health services remotely for our clients, as well as case management and emotional support. Ayuda’s Language Access Program has provided remote translation and interpretation services for individuals served by DC non-profit organizations.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

All of Ayuda's services will be able to delivered remotely, depending on the client and their needs. We plan to maintain the remote clinic for domestic violence survivors, as well as continue remote translation and interpretation services for individuals served by DC non-profit organizations. Due to the nature of our work, the need to see clients in-person will be a necessity (ie. signatures on immigration documents, copies of important documentation for immigration filings, food delivery, etc.).
