Donors have expressed extreme concern about the use of their personal information by charities and the desire to have this information kept confidential. The exchanging and sale of lists for telemarketing and the mass distribution of "junk mail," among other things, can be minimized if the charity assures the privacy of its donors. Privacy policies are assigned to one of the following categories:

  • Yes: This charity has a written donor privacy policy published on its website, which states unambiguously that (1) it will not share or sell a donor's personal information with anyone else, nor send donor mailings on behalf of other organizations or (2) it will only share or sell personal information once the donor has given the charity specific permission to do so.

How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

Miriam's Kitchen increased our reserve policy from 3 months to 6 months due to increased uncertainty caused by the pandemic. From March 2020 to October 2021, we incurred additional costs to modify direct service programs outdoors (with rental of tents and outdoor restrooms), enhance cleaning protocols, and purchase and distribute PPE for staff and our guests. Miriam's Kitchen applied for and received a PPP loan that enabled us to maintain full staff.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

Miriam's Kitchen pivoted quickly to provide consistent services from meals to housing throughout the pandemic. While increasing income, improving health and obtaining housing were the ultimate goal, the pandemic elevated critical care like providing PPE, wellness checks, and food delivery. Miriam's Kitchen adopted distancing, mask, and other COVID protocols to keep guests, staff, and volunteers as safe as possible. People who could work remotely were encouraged to do so, so that the people who needed to be on the front lines had fewer vectors of exposure.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

We transitioned on-site programs to outdoor tents. Instead of eating meals in our dining room, individuals experiencing homelessness received meals packed in to-go containers. There was an increased emphasis on food security early in the pandemic. Our Street Outreach team delivered meals to individuals who were too afraid to congregate in shelters and our housing team delivered groceries and prepared, frozen meals to our elderly residents so they could shelter in place. We also provided phones to individuals who did not have any so they could access services that increasingly moved online.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

We will continue to provide phones for clients needing help to bridge the digital divide. We have also advocated for virtual services that have helped expedite the housing process remain in place.

As a system orchestrator, Miriam's Kitchen plays a critical role convening government agencies, non-profits, businesses, and faith organizations to coordinate efforts and outcomes around the shared city-wide vision of ending chronic homelessness in Washington, D.C. This system-level strategy is paying off. Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


Basic health protocols to wash your hands and stay home when you’re sick are impossible for our guests experiencing homelessness. And while most of us went into lock down, many of our guests were getting locked out of places to get food and use the restroom. With libraries, restaurants, coffee shops, and more closed, one of our guests said, "Where am I supposed to go? The whole world is closing."  During the pandemic, many agencies were forced to shut down. Miriam’s Kitchen pivoted early. We created a Virus Response Team made up of senior leadership and program directors to review new guidance from city officials and discuss protocols to help keep our community safe health and informed. Those early decisions (made before COVID-19 was declared a national pandemic on March 13) to cancel volunteer shifts, serve meals in to-go containers, and install tents and portable bathrooms and sinks meant that we could continue to serve our guests while minimizing risk for staff and an emergency core of volunteers. Starting Monday, March 16, Miriam’s Kitchen was one of three organizations still serving meals and guests experiencing homelessness. Across our 38 years of operation we have demonstrated our commitment to our guests by keeping our doors open without interruption, and it is our intent to continue doing so.
