How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
WRL hosts several in-person fundraising events and also provides education about wildlife by giving presentations to clubs, associations and community events; however, COVID-19 resulted in an inability to attend person-to-person events.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
Some of WRL's partnering veterinarians stopped accepting and holding wildlife from the public, which minimized our ability to transport wildlife to networking wildlife rehabilitators.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
We provided masks to all of our transporters so they could be safe while picking up wildlife from our partnering veterinarians. When wildlife was transported and delivered to rehabilitators, it was often left in containers for the rehabilitators to retrieve, minimizing in-person contact.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
Board and membership meetings were held virtually rather than in-person, and we will continue with that for the foreseeable future.

One of WRL's largest programs, was changed from being called a wildlife hotline to a wildlife helpline after feedback explaining the difference between the two in comparison to other industries.

Raising Awareness
WRL networks with wildlife centers, animals shelters and veterinary practices to get wildlife the help it needs for a second chance at life. WRL partners with over 30 permitted wildlife rehabilitators who accept calls from the Wildlife Helpline to rehabilitate and release Virginia's native wildlife.
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
Covid 19 created challenges in regards to personal contact. WRL changed it's education model from in-person to virtual and was still able to provide quality education about wildlife. Transporters continued delivering animals by changing to a no contact method of leaving contained animals at rehabilitators' homes. Masks were also provided to all transporters as a precautionary effort.
