Sightline Institute
Mission
Sightline Institute is an independent, nonprofit research and communications center working to make the Northwest a global model of sustainability-strong communities, a green economy, and a healthy environment. Since 1993, we have equipped policymakers, and citizens with the information and tools they need to advance solutions to the most significant challenges facing the Northwest. Our innovative research and practical ideas connect the dots across a range of issues, giving leaders the resources they need to effect change. In the over two decades of our existence, we have come to fill a crucial niche in the sustainability movement: the convergence of science-based research and communications. We show social change-makers how to put sustainability theory into practice and how to convert scientific findings into language and policy that resonate with social values.
Vision
We envision in Cascadia an economy and way of life that are environmentally sound, economically vibrant, and socially just. We believe that if Cascadians succeed at reconciling themselves with the natural heritage of this place—the greenest part of history’s richest civilization—we can set an example for the world.
Goals
- 1.At Sightline, we believe a sustainable Cascadia starts with a healthy democracy. Without fair elections and functional governments, progress stalls. That's why Democracy and Elections is a core program — we're fixing broken systems that empower extremists, shut out voters, and limit real choice. When democracy works, everything else can, too.
- 2.The future is clean — and possible. Sightline's Climate and Energy program accelerates Cascadia's shift to clean, reliable, affordable electricity while building climate resilience. We deliver policy ideas and analysis to help lawmakers and advocates create healthier homes, cleaner air and water, and communities safer from wildfires.
- 3.Imagine neighborhoods where teachers, baristas, and healthcare workers can afford to live near their jobs — where kids walk to school and local entrepreneurs thrive. That's housing abundance, and it's within reach. Sightline Institute rewrites outdated rules limiting community growth across Cascadia, helping the region expand — one backyard cottage or small apartment at a time.
