Mission: RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) is the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800.656.HOPE, online.rainn.org y rainn.org/es) in partnership with more than 1,000 local sexual assault service providers across the country and operates the DoD Safe Helpline for the Department of Defense. RAINN also carries out programs to prevent sexual violence, help survivors, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.

Donors have expressed extreme concern about the use of their personal information by charities and the desire to have this information kept confidential. The exchanging and sale of lists for telemarketing and the mass distribution of "junk mail," among other things, can be minimized if the charity assures the privacy of its donors. Privacy policies are assigned to one of the following categories:

  • Yes: This charity has a written donor privacy policy published on its website, which states unambiguously that (1) it will not share or sell a donor's personal information with anyone else, nor send donor mailings on behalf of other organizations or (2) it will only share or sell personal information once the donor has given the charity specific permission to do so.

  • Opt-out: The charity has a written privacy policy published on its website which enables donors to tell the charity to remove their names and contact information from lists the charity shares or sells. How a donor can have themselves removed from a list differs from one charity to the next, but any and all opt-out policies require donors to take specific action to protect their privacy.

  • In 2020, RAINN’s victim service programs served a record-breaking 323,122 individuals, an average of about 27,000 people each month.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

RAINN was able to not only maintain current staffing, we made some hires to meet increased demand from emergency funds that RAINN was able to apply for and was granted as funders acknowledged the critical nature of the 24/7, anonymous, secure online hotline for sexual assault survivors and their loved ones through out the COVID-19 pandemic.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact survivors of sexual violence, RAINN has experienced a record number of people accessing direct support and resources from RAINN’s victim service programs, and for the first time in our 26 year history, half of hotline visitors were minors. As states have eased COVID-19 restrictions, a record number of people sought services. A total of 60,437 people received help from RAINN’s victim service programs in May and June — the highest number of individuals served per month in RAINN’s 26-year history. Of the minors who discussed coronavirus-related concerns, 3 out of 4 said they were living with the person who was abusing them. In the absence of in-person services and personal support networks, RAINN’s Online Hotline was a critical resource for minors experiencing child sexual abuse during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

At the onset of the pandemic, RAINN's staff pivoted to a fully office and included compliant computer covers to ensure the 24/7 National Sexual Assault Hotline remained operational. RAINN recruited, hired, trained, and on-boarded 8 additional part-time support specialists, which resulted in approximately 8,000 hours of direct support during the first year of the pandemic, all remotely. In August 2021, RAINN launched a revolutionized hotline training, Essential Skills, and a brand new Learning Management System. At its framework, Essential Skills comprises 8 courses, 4 live-facilitated sessions, and spans a total of 40 hours. The training will prepare new staff and volunteers for their first day on the National Sexual Assault Hotline or Safe Helpline and will cover research-based content and relevant support skills. RAINN’s new Learning Management System is entirely virtual, allowing RAINN to greatly increase our pool of eligible hotline staff and volunteers to meet heightened demand.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

The Essentials Skills and the Learning Management System are permanent innovations that rolled out during the pandemic, but will be in place permanently to expand our reach and meet demand for the 24/7 National Sexual Assault Hotline and other victim service programs all year round. Many of our hires included HR personnel to support not only recruitment, but retention, which will ensure RAINN emerges from the pandemic stronger that ever as our people are our power. Finally, we increased our investment in the health and wellness of staff and volunteers from the hotline specialists to communications and policy professionals working in the field of sexual violence every day.
