Van Andel Institute

Mission

Founded by Jay and Betty Van Andel, Van Andel Institute's (VAI) goal is to have an impact world-wide on medical science and education. The Institute supports Van Andel Research Institute (VARI), the Van Andel Institute Graduate School, and the Van Andel Institute for Education in achieving this goal. VARI conducts biomedical research, with a focus on cancer and Parkinson disease and with an emphasis on translating scientific research results into clinical applications. Van Andel Institute Graduate School transforms students into independent scientists through an intense, problem focused Ph.D. degree in molecular and cellular biology. Van Andel Institute for Education strengthens K-12 science education and prepares and motivates individuals to pursue science or science-related professions. Located in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, the Institute has led the expansion of the life science industry in this region.
