This organization was impacted by COVID-19 in a way that effected their financial health in 2020. This normally would have reduced their star rating. Due to the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, we give charities such as this one the opportunity to share the story of COVID's impact on them, and doing this pauses our revision of their rating. Charities may submit their own pandemic responses through their nonprofit portal.
Mag America Inc. reported being impacted by COVID-19 in the following ways:
Program Delivery
Fundraising Capacity
Administrative Capacity
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
MAG America's fundraising activities, especially for individual donors, were hindered as in-person engagement activities for supporters and visits with donors were prohibited.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
COVID-19 had impacted project implementation in the field with some operations having been temporarily suspended on an ad-hoc basis when COVID-19 infection rates increased in some countries, such as Laos and Vietnam. Travel restrictions also impacted programs during the pandemic. In some of the programs, there were issues with getting staff in and out of programs due to closure of airports, lack of flights, and quarantine restrictions.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
Prior to widespread vaccination in the U.S., MAG America adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic with a more online mode of working, using video calls and phone calls in lieu of standard, in-person meetings with partners, USG donors, and for staff meetings and Board meetings. We leaned more heavily into digital engagement with our private donors, offering virtual events held on Zoom and having staff and Board making annual thank-you calls to individual donors from their homes instead of gathering in person to do so. Also, staff had switched to teleworking and any necessary office visits were coordinated to ensure proper social distancing and minimal overlap.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
MAG America has switched to a hybrid work schedule that allows for flexibility between in-office and remote work for staff.

Raising Awareness
Policy Advocacy
We work with other organizations on ongoing engagement to raise awareness of the threat landmines and unexploded ordnance, and the benefits of humanitarian mine action (HMA) and conventional weapons destruction (CWD). For example, we work with InterAction to advocate for civilian protection policies as part of the Protection of Civilians Working Group, and, in support of the International Network on Explosive Weapons, encourage people to call on world leaders to sign a political agreement limiting the use of explosive weapons in populated areas. We foster relationships with our USG donors, the State Dept. and USAID, and engage with Congress to provide briefings, highlight the importance of HMA and CWD, and increase the scale and impact of this vital work. We use our social media and online presence to promote HMA with the public, so more people learn of the importance of clearing landmines and other explosives in conflict-affected areas all over the world.
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
We adopted a hybrid working schedule for staff and recognized the benefits of hybrid working in the office and from home. We offered public engagement events for supporters online as the pandemic made in-person events too risky at the time.
