The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
Over the course of the two years, CGD experts have responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, global debt sustainability concerns, and the evolving situation in Afghanistan, all areas in need of evidence-based research and innovative policy solutions. The past two years have illustrated the value of responsive and evidence-based analysis produced by trusted authorities. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, CGD remains a trusted source of high-quality research and real-time commentary on critical topics in global development. Between October 2020 and March 2021 CGD experts hosted 82 virtual events, total event registrations doubled, and over 160,000 people viewed our events from countries on every continent. CGD's website, including our blog and publications, received nearly 2 million page views in a six-month period. CGD experts were also widely featured across major newspaper, radio, and TV outlets. When compared to 2019, our mentions rose by nearly 350 percent in 2020. In March 2020, we temporarily closed our offices. Staff were required to work remotely, events were moved online, and all international travel was canceled. Our staff quickly and effectively pivoted to this all-virtual environment and continued to deliver engaging and robust work. Like most think tanks, restrictions on in person gatherings tested our most visible activity, but our experts and communications team weathered the storm, increasing both the reach and scope of our research as the pandemic brought about new challenges to the global development landscape. Our robust events program—currently blending a mixed format of virtual and in-person—continues to allow our work to reach a wider audience. We will offer a virtual component to all of our public events moving forward, and incorporate more virtual elements to our in-person events when they resume (such as virtual speakers with in-person presentations).
