We are members of an association of rescue missions. We have provided the opportunity for various team members to attend the national and regional trainings on various topics, including leadership skills. We are members of a national association of rescue missions (CityGate Network) engaging in local, regional and national efforts to further our goals (including advocating with local and national government officials). We have an active social media program designed to inform and educate the public. Various members of our senior management team participate in local coalitions (both public and private) to work collectively to end homelessness and provide for the poor. We have strategic partnerships with organizations to leverage their expertise and provide expanded services to our client base. This includes medical, mental health and legal services. Our CEO is regularly featured in local and international media to discuss current issues impacting homelessness and those living in poverty.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
COVID created both challenges and opportunities for the Mission. Central Union Mission has an emergency rescue shelter housing up to 170 men each day and our Comprehensive Family Resource Center provides food and clothing to over 4,500 individuals monthly. Shelter residents are housed in dormitory style housing making social distancing impossible. Our distribution facility was supported by volunteers who were no longer available due to the pandemic. COVID has required a change in every facet of our operations. We developed early COVID detection protocols (which we shared with other rescue missions in the city) as well as procedures to isolate impacted individuals and contact tracing. Our resource center operations were reformulated and streamlined so that food distributions, which increased to over 5,300 per month during COVID, were possible without the support of volunteers. The result: we had no COVID infections for the vast majority of the time and we continued all key housing and food operations without disruption.
