Amideast regularly partners with other organizations to better reach and provide solutions for beneficiary audiences, collaborating in the design and implementation of programs and projects, including in the development of training components designed to strengthen the organizational capacities of local communities. We are represented in professional associations relevant to our organizational goals, including--at the board level--the Alliance for International Exchange and the Forum on Education Abroad, among others. Our staff provides thought leadership in local and international forums and contributes to shaping narratives and conversations within relevant professional communities.

Amideast’s work is continually evolving to respond to global changes, shifts in our operating environment, and the needs of our beneficiary communities. Along with the rest of the world, our programs shifted online in 2020. While much of our work with beneficiaries has returned to face-to-face, there are communities we can reach and needs we can continue to address only virtually. Among our strategic objectives is to bring transformational opportunities to marginalized individuals and communities, including persons with disabilities, refugees, and the economically underserved. To ensure inclusion of persons with disabilities in the new paradigm of digital programming, we undertook an extensive assessment of and subsequently revised our learning management system to be fully accessible and compliant with WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) standards. In addition, we developed new versions of the Amideast Online English Language Placement Test for vision- and hearing-impaired individuals. These adaptations enabled us to meet the needs of disabled beneficiaries in our training and other programs, and to fully accommodate a student with multiple disabilities in a hybrid education abroad course. On a different track, we have long been concerned that community college students—who represent a significant portion of U.S. undergraduates—have traditionally constituted only a small proportion of those studying abroad due to financial obstacles as well as a lack of programmatic relevance. The pandemic disproportionately impacted community colleges, which suffered much larger declines in enrollments and revenues than did their four-year counterparts, further reducing their ability to support study abroad. This past year, Amideast instituted a fundraising campaign to support our implementation of innovative programs designed to meet the specific needs of community college students, thereby addressing the growing inequity in their access to education abroad.
