    Norfolk Botanical Garden

    Mission

    Established in 1938 by a Works Progress Administration grant, Norfolk Botanical Garden has grown to be Virginia's largest botanical garden, encompassing 175 acres of themed gardens and natural areas. With annual attendance exceeding 431,000, the Garden is a premier destination for families and provides a unique opportunity to choose from walking tours, tram rides, or boat tours. All are handicapped accessible. It has the largest collection of azaleas and rhododendrons on the East Coast and is home to 61 trees classified as state champions. The Virginia General Assembly designated Norfolk Botanical Garden a State Botanical Garden in 1995. The Garden is on the list of Virginia Historic Landmarks and the National Register of Historic Places. The American Alliance of Museums granted the Garden full accreditation in 2008. The Garden's mission is to immerse visitors in a world of beauty, lead through environmental action, and inspire through education and connection to nature.
