The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year
Since Peacework's inception, over 30,000 participants from academic, corporate, medical, and civic organizations have served with Peacework in 28 countries, a total value of services and outreach exceeding $104 million in engineering, agriculture, technology, education, business, health, and other fields. Then suddenly on March 4, 2020, all Peacework programs were suspended due to COVID. COVID suspended what would have been $2.8 million in Peacework service programs and $674,000 in operations. In consultation with Josh Knauer of JumpScale, we shifted our direction 180° into the headwinds of the pandemic. Considering long-term strategies to mitigate public health challenges, we developed new virtual partnerships to meet critical human needs in a post-COVID environment by meeting urgent needs in extreme poverty and conflict and “bringing people together to build a better world.” Here’s an example. In the spirit of bringing people together to build a better world, we gathered a simple three-way partnership of two international universities and a private enterprise to conduct a virtual feasibility study for a promising new clean tech field application. The first task was to determine demand. Then, we wanted to consider the technical, financial, cultural, and regulatory factors that would influence successful deployment of water purification systems in a unique environment, the massive Mekong Delta, third largest in Asia. Over the fall of 2021, 35 business students at the University of Arkansas and 22 students at the College of Rural Development of Vietnam explored this possibility with ANSA-NA. ANSA-NA provided the product parameters; Arkansas students evaluated the demand and models and students in Vietnam conducted field work. This virtual project could be a model for assessing clean tech solutions while promoting international collaboration and providing valuable experiences for future professionals in technology, business, and public policy.
