Health Through Walls Inc.
Mission
HtW was created to assist prisons in resource-poor countries test, treat and control the spread of contagious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, TB, Cholera, COVID-19, STIs and other emerging infectious diseases; to implement programs to eradicate malnutrition in prisons; to establish a Health Promotion Peer Education program in prisons; to modernize systems to identify contagious diseases and to implement skills training programs so that prisoners can develop a skill to use once they are released from prison. Our focus is on key populations, affected family members/sex partners and the communities in which they live. At inception, HtW was the only NGO dedicated to providing care to the prison population.
Vision
Health through Walls envisions a world where every person—regardless of incarceration—has access to compassionate, equitable, and dignified healthcare. By breaking down barriers and strengthening prison health systems, we aim to protect both individual and public health, fostering sustainable, inclusive, and innovative care that ensures no one is left behind.
Goals
- 1.Health through Walls develops new programs by assessing emerging needs, piloting innovative solutions, and partnering with local staff to ensure relevance and sustainability. From expanding care for chronic illness to using technology and tele-mentoring, we adapt quickly so prison health systems stay resilient and responsive to changing challenges.
- 2.Health through Walls grows programs by building on proven successes, expanding services to reach more facilities, and strengthening partnerships. Through training, technology, and sustainable systems, we scale effective models to improve care, protect public health, and ensure no one is left behind.
- 3.Health through Walls advances advocacy by raising awareness of prison health needs, influencing policy, and promoting equity. We work with partners to break down barriers, uphold human rights, and ensure the voices of incarcerated people are included in shaping healthier, more just systems.
